As part of the Climate Resilience Regional Challenge, I support communities advancing work to better understand, plan, and implement climate resilience programs and projects with a focus on the Gulf Coast. I identify training and peer learning opportunities and work across NOAA teams to provide technical assistance to local partners to ensure healthy coastal ecosystems, resilient communities, and sustainable economies.

I served as a subject matter expert on urban and regional planning and policy issues related to climate resilience, managed NLC's role in the Cities for Smart Surfaces project with ten cities, and provided research and programmatic support on climate resilience initiatives. Part of my work included identifying opportunities to broaden the array of relevant and needed resources available to municipal leaders in NLC member cities.

Under the Water Business Line, I worked with teams of subject-matter experts to integrate resilience and sustainability considerations into projects. My work primarily centered on proposal development for resiliency projects, climate change adaptation planning in transportation projects, and general project support across disciplines and business lines.

Miami, Florida

I focused on building capacity across 10+ county departments and 32 municipal governments by creating partnerships and connecting local government staff to resources to support their sea level rise and water management plans. My work included developing and implementing climate and water resiliency workshops, trainings, and knowledge-sharing forums for government staff, consultants, and community groups. I led initiatives to compile and track county and municipal climate resiliency projects to prepare for state and federal funding opportunities and secured grant funding for resilience projects related to water management, improved water quality, and climate adaptation.

Beaufort, North Carolina

I created a framework for North Carolina coastal communities to use to identify their physical and social vulnerabilities under changing climate conditions. My work focused on five pilot communities that used the vulnerability mapping framework to identify community needs and resilience projects. Over the course of my research, I developed and managed surveys to identify the most pressing impacts from weather-related hazards in communities along the North Carolina coast to help inform DCM's future resilience work.

Bloomington, Indiana

I interviewed and selected candidates for the SPEA VISTA Fellows Program which placed students and professionals in capacity-building positions at social and environmental policy organizations around the country for a one-year term. Part of my work entailed building partnerships with organizations such as the Metropolitan Planning Council (Chicago, IL), the Community Water Center (Visalia, CA) and the National Human Services Assembly (Washington, D.C.). As part of my program management duties, I created monthly and biennial reports for state and national AmeriCorps headquarters to showcase VISTA Fellows’ accomplishments. I also assisted with the state grant application to secure funds of up to $40,000 for the continuation of the program.

Congaree National Park, South Carolina

I collected and synthesized research on climate change impacts to natural and cultural resources in Congaree National Park (South Carolina), Cape Lookout National Sea Shore (North Carolina), and Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (Georgia). I served as the liaison between all three parks, the South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative, and the Gulf Coast Cooperative Ecosystems Studies Unit and designed public web communications pages in the Content Management System (CMS) on climate change in the Southeast region.

I held office hours, answered email inquiries, and met with students who needed assistance in a course entitled, "Urban Problems and Solutions," which focused on urban poverty, crime, policing, housing and development, and social policy issues. Part of my duties included grading weekly responses to assigned questions and assisting the professor during class.

Bloomington, Indiana

I coordinated and managed groups of up to 50 volunteers during work days in local woodland areas to remove invasive plant species. Part of my work included targeting two neighborhoods in which I planned and managed volunteer work days to educate and aid groups in removing invasive species on their private properties. In addition to my volunteer management work, I assisted in developing educational materials for customers on ecosystem health for a local grocery and garden cooperative, Bloomingfoods.

Bloomington, Indiana

I directed art activities at the Lincoln Street Boys and Girls Club including intern and volunteer tasks, member health and development, and member progress in the visual, performing, and literary arts. My work included partnering with multiple organizations to hire and manage performing arts events for audiences of up to 200 students and community members. Much of my work focused on designing and teaching a year-long arts-based curriculum based on global cultural events and natural history to up to 70 students per day. I also supervised three interns and 15 volunteers per day. I managed separate annual budgets of $10,000 for the visual arts program and $10,000 for the performing arts program.

Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana

I advised individual students on study abroad and internship programs to suit their academic needs, language level, and personal interest. Part of my work included making presentations on life abroad, culture shock, and financial aid to groups of 5 to 50 students, parents, and staff around campus. I also created informational materials for display in high traffic areas on campus.

Collins Living-Learning Center, Bloomington, Indiana

I planned and coordinated weekly programs on a variety of topics including environmental sustainability, cultural traditions around the world, and personal practices for healthier, greener living for groups of 30-500 student residents. My work included applying for project grants from the learning center and tracking budgets of up to $7500 per year. I oversaw daily activities for 60 residents by providing emergency response, enforcing residential policy, and developing a safe, engaged community. Finally, I created partnerships between Collins LLC and outside organizations to facilitate student involvement around campus and Bloomington.

I set up experiments and gathered data from the greenhouse and field sites to evaluate rate of invasive species growth under different conditions. In my second year, I reviewed data from other interns and volunteers for quality control and managed the primary researcher's database.
