Volunteer Accountant

Afid

I visited Kachimbeka a charity based in Katumbi in a remote part of Malawi to assist them in setting up accounting records, advise them on 'best practice' and train volunteers in managing everything once I departed. The main challenges I faced was the lack of electricity and suitable equipment to enable them to operate a simple set of computerised spreadsheet. In addition most volunteers had little or no understanding of basic bookkeeping. However, in the 3 1/2 week I was there, I manage to set up everything and train 3 volunteer to manage the cashbooks (one manual and one on a PC). The director, who had some financial training, was trained on the ledger, Income&Expenses and balance sheet. I made some friends forever! Love Malawi and its people so friendly.
