Proposal and management of infrastructure projects to enable data discovery and the linking of research data via common linkages such as researchers, research groups, funders, research activities/grants, location, field of research, and scientific terminology. A major project I was responsible for was a national registry of research grant information and associated discovery service for research grants.

Library And Information Resources

Reporting to the University Librarian, I managed the testing, implementation and process changes required to switch from an existing ILS to a completely new product with very different functionality. This is a liaison role working with the vendor, senior library managers, operational staff, and IT support staff.

In this role I lead the formulation and implementation of policy, strategy and solutions for the Library’s digital archiving and digital collections preservation operations, including web archiving. I directed a branch of ten technical staff responsible for the Library’s digital archiving and digital preservation operations and effectively managed the physical, financial, technological and staffing resources with an emphasis on continuous improvement.I was required to contribute to the development and implementation of major digital library infrastructure projects within the Library and work constructively with a wide range of individuals to achieve the Library's digital collection management and preservation needs.

The Australian National Data Service supports the discovery of, and access to, research data held in Australian universities, publicly funded research agencies and government organisations. I was involved in the implementation of a range of ICT utilities to ensure greater use and re-use of existing data resources, as well as better management of data generated in Australian research.My role was to assist the Directors in the strategic implementation of ANDS Programs to support Australian and international eResearch, to liaise with research communities to define their eResearch requirements, and to identify, analyse, design and implement metadata schema and online services to meet those requirements. I also implemented business process tracking and reporting systems for ANDS activities.

I was appointed to this position after an audit identified the need to change the structure, focus and culture of the Repository. As well as being the line manager for a unit of 14 staff, I also lead the development of requirements for a new Collection Management System for the Repository and in the interim implemented automated business process tracking and reporting systems for the daily operations of the unit which was required to delivered terabytes of exploration data on request to hundreds of clients each year while receiving and cataloguing material arriving on a daily basis from oil drilling and exploration activities.

I worked for the National Library of Australia in the Information Technology Division as Director of the Collection Infrastructure Branch, which supports and develops systems for managing and delivering the collections. This included the Library's digital and physical collections in all formats. I led a team of software developers and business analysts and my principle responsibility was to manage projects which involved either the development of software systems or the acquisition and customisation of software to achieve business efficiency and new services for the Australian public and other libraries. I attended regular meetings (twice per year) of the International Internet Preservation Consortium since it was founded in 2003 until 2007, as the delegate for the National Library of Australia and leader of a working group. Over that period I developed a commitment to the preservation of born digital content and have been involved since in Digital Preservation and Digital Repository initiatives.

I was invited to spend a year working for the Library and Archives of Canada on a government interchange program from August 2006 to July 2007 as Manager of Strategic Initiatives for their IT Branch. My role was principally as a consultant and I was commissioned to undertake a number of studies and to work with colleagues to raise their awareness of new technology trends and initiatives and to build their connections with similar organisations internationally.
