I also reviewed and made inputs into internal technical reports, SOPs and student theses. • Attended conferences, workshops and other training events to expand and supplement existing body of scientific knowledge. My area of responsibility and representation included small-scale fermentation laboratories (1L – 30L), microbiology, analytical, and wastewater treatment laboratories. My functions as a SHEQ representative and per Section 18 of the OHS Act included:• Formed part of the Emergency Response Team for our building where my role was as SHEQ representative as well as a Fire Fighter.• Review of the effectiveness of H&S measures in my designated areas.• Routine inspections of my areas, and the identification and reporting of hazards and major incidents.• Leading and participating in root cause analysis of safety incidents.• Leading and compilation of area and equipment risk assessments. • Inspection of the workplace and compilation of monthly feedback reports.• Participate in consultation with safety inspectors and accompany inspectors on inspections.• Attend and participate in regular H&S representative Committee meetings.• Attend regular SHEQ training and awareness workshops, for example, general laboratory health and safety, injury on duty process, corrective action request, OHS act legal liability and PPE awareness. During my time as SHEQ representative, I was instrumental in the compilation and maintenance of laboratory SHEQ files. This included the management of waste and other documentation records, current standard operating procedures (SOPs), equipment commissioning checklists. I have participated in an internal laboratory audit and made inputs into the findings and root-cause documents. It was my responsibility to ensure findings are resolved to an acceptable standard. I have been commended by an external auditor for the quality of SHEQ documentation of our research group. -
