My core function was to develop and demonstrate processes for the production of bio-based products through: • Bioprocess R&D including process control and optimization, scale-up of microbial fermentation processes and development of downstream operations for final product formulation. • Active role and technical lead in research projects and performing research activities (e.g., fermentation studies, application studies, and method development). This included the initiation and conducting of scientific research studies.• The compilation, analysis, and interpretation of scientific results into manuscripts, posters, presentations, and technical reports. I also reviewed and made inputs into internal technical reports, SOPs and student theses. • Attended conferences, workshops and other training events to expand and supplement existing body of scientific knowledge. This included presentation of course material at the annual CSIR Bioprocessing Workshop (2016 to present).• Shift team leader for the contract manufacture of bio-based products.• Lead and participated in root cause analysis activities.My outputs included:• Part of a team that delivered 3 technology demonstration packages that were transferred to SMMEs• Author and compilation of >45 SOPs and technical reports • Co-author of 2 book chapters • Presentation of research results at 9 national conferences• Participation in an international 2 week advanced course in Environmental Biotechnology at the Technische Universiteit Delft, The Netherlands• Author and contributed to proposals that were funded (~3.7 M)• Training and coaching of >10 interns, students and in-service trainees on process tasks and methods• Support of an SMME with a turnover of >1.3M per annum

I was a SHEQ representative for our Research Group for over 5 years. My area of responsibility and representation included small-scale fermentation laboratories (1L – 30L), microbiology, analytical, and wastewater treatment laboratories. My functions as a SHEQ representative and per Section 18 of the OHS Act included:• Formed part of the Emergency Response Team for our building where my role was as SHEQ representative as well as a Fire Fighter.• Review of the effectiveness of H&S measures in my designated areas.• Routine inspections of my areas, and the identification and reporting of hazards and major incidents.• Leading and participating in root cause analysis of safety incidents.• Leading and compilation of area and equipment risk assessments. • Inspection of the workplace and compilation of monthly feedback reports.• Participate in consultation with safety inspectors and accompany inspectors on inspections.• Attend and participate in regular H&S representative Committee meetings.• Attend regular SHEQ training and awareness workshops, for example, general laboratory health and safety, injury on duty process, corrective action request, OHS act legal liability and PPE awareness. During my time as SHEQ representative, I was instrumental in the compilation and maintenance of laboratory SHEQ files. This included the management of waste and other documentation records, current standard operating procedures (SOPs), equipment commissioning checklists. I have participated in an internal laboratory audit and made inputs into the findings and root-cause documents. It was my responsibility to ensure findings are resolved to an acceptable standard. I have been commended by an external auditor for the quality of SHEQ documentation of our research group.

My core function was to: • Complete a project within the Agro-manufacturing research group at the CSIR. The results that I generated were written up as a research thesis and submitted to the University of Cape Town. The thesis was approved, and I was consequently awarded an MSc degree in Engineering. Project title: Investigating the robustness of an omega-3 producing micro algal isolate from a bio process perspective.• Completed a field trial where I was stationed in St. Helena Bay to conduct a microalgal trial to test a new hypothesis.

Tutoring of Secondary and Tertiary level students in the scientific and biological areas.

Internship appointment by the NRF for the DST-NRF Internship Programme. Based at the CSIR Biosciences Department. Focus Area: Biopeptides.My core function was to perform group research activities such as: • Become competent in process tasks and activities• Collection and interpretation of experimental data• Contribution to technical reports and standard operating procedures

Mentoring included the tutoring of undergraduate Biochemistry students as well as preparation for tests and exams. One-on-one situations and groups of 10+ students have been managed. Practical demonstration included the delegation of undergraduate Biochemistry students.Skills developed: time management, delegation, leadership, intra- and interpersonal, organisational.
