About Monty Johnson

Dynamic and results-driven leader with 30+ years experience in all phases of delivering high-technology communications products and solutions to world-wide customers, from Bell Labs engineer to CEO. Very strong balance between technical, business, and strategic thinking, with a unique ability to lead through complexity and change. Proven track record of execution, finding a positive path to accomplish business goals. Solid experience in business, operations, R&D, product management, and sales. Strong partnership and consultative selling skills. Expert in directing, motivating, and hiring/coaching of business, technical, and customer-facing personnel. Instills enthusiasm and belief that team can win.Following President/GM role at Tekelec and serving as CEO and Vice Chairman of Wireless Telecom Group, joined past Motorola and industry contact Chris Gilbert as GM, Americas of Ubiquisys, the world leader in intelligent small cells. The mission was to build an Americas sales and operations team to win and service the region’s top mobile operators, with a combination of UMTS 3G, LTE, and WiFi-based small cell solutions. The conclusion was successful acquisition by Cisco. Within Cisco lead Americas sales for combined licensed and WiFi wireless end-to-end solutions. After serving commitment period within Cisco as key employee from the Ubiquisys acquisition, consulted on and explored building a company focused on Public Safety/FirstNet, military, and other dedicated LTE networks. As a result including concern of both performance limitations of and extensive dependence upon GPS, joined Netherlands-based private company OPNT as head of global sales and BD, focused on terrestrial-based precision timing and location solutions. Elevated to CEO, pivoted the company to realize the world’s terrestrial-based, wired plus wireless, “time-as-a-service” operating company, with SLA-backed service in the absence of and GNSS other satellite-based time delivery alternatives.

  • Originpnt, Inc
    Chief Executive Officer / Co-Founder
Originpnt, Inc Jan 2023 - Present
OriginPNT's mission is to be the world's commercial leader in telecom network-based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) Compliance-Assurance-as-a-Service.
  • Opnt B.V.
    Ceo
    Opnt B.V. Jun 2019 - Aug 2023
OPNT (Optical Positioning, Navigation, and Timing) is an "overlay operating company" delivering our global, terrestrial-based "timing-as-a-service" offering as a parallel to GPS and other satellite-based offerings. OPNT's Global Terrestrial Timing Service (GTTS) utilizes national and global fiber-based networks to provide wide-area, ultra-reliable operation that cost-effectively ranges from millisecond levels to picoseconds. OPNT's monthly service-based pricing via its end-to-end solution follows the proven model of the world's global telecom operators. This service removes the need for customers having to individually engineer, purchase, install, and operate GPS antennas, timing boxes, cesium clocks, et al. OPNT will deliver world-class service when and where it is needed, at the accuracy and reliability levels required.
  • Opnt B.V.
Head, Global Sales And Business Development
    Opnt B.V. Mar 2017 - May 2019
OPNT is the world leader in enabling ultra-precision timing through wide-area communications and information networks, including without dependence upon GPS. The solution is based on the sub-nanosecond-precision technology known as the "White Rabbit" timing project, originated at CERN and nominated to become V3 of the IEEE 1588 Precision Timing Protocol (PTP) solution. Unlike PTP V2 however, which is impractical to deploy to the degree necessary to achieve optimum timing results and even then cannot assure wide-area results at or much below micro second levels, the White Rabbit solution can cost-effectively provide nation/continent-wide timing solutions at the one nanosecond level. Further, when combined with PTP V2 at the edge, gradual migration paths can be followed that readily result in nation/continent-wide timing solutions of less than 100 nanoseconds. In addition to enhancing precision-sensitive use cases such as financial market transaction recording, smart energy grid management, and real-time location services for IoT, the increased global use of 4G LTE-TDD and global migration to 5G require increased timing accuracy for optimum operation. Following a successful live-network trial with Vodafone and investment by KPN, my role is to lead the company's efforts to successfully bring OPNT's solution to the global Information and Communications Technology markets.
  • Available And Seeking Full-Time Employment
    Consultant
Available And Seeking Full-Time Employment Aug 2015 - Aug 2016
Working with GWT owner to build strategy and business toward winning a material share of the FirstNet public safety business, along with other LTE-based wide area networks. Joint vision has been to create sister company, for which I would/will serve as CEO. As such, have been jointly driving strategy, building business models, creating offering and pricing, pitching potential partners and investors, etc. Effort remains in full progress, with impressive results to date including several state trials in place, but still against significant odds (e.g. acquisition of spectrum, for which FirstNet is holding a tight rein, while continuing to bias decision toward the tier 1 MNOs). Although a herculean effort so far and potential remains, I believe it is time to consider other possibilities.
  • Gwt Technologies
Consultant - Advanced Lte Solutions For Public Safety
    Gwt Technologies Aug 2015 - Mar 2016
The maturation of LTE along with the continued advances in small cells and LTE "network in a box" technologies provide a natural match for public safety requirements, including the FirstNet program within the US. With tens of thousands of public safety entities and local jurisdictions across the US operating legacy, often outdated and isolated solutions, there is an urgent need to deliver fully robust end-to-end LTE-based solutions and to do so in ways that can fit into both the historical per-jurisdiction decision-making processes along with that of FirstNet. My focus is toward realizing the combined technical, business, and partner/collaboration paths to make this a reality. The results, while critical to the national and global public safety challenges, are also directly applicable to other wide-area network needs, including those of utilities, schools, IoT, smart grid, and smart city.In addition to this exciting work, I am open to consulting or joining others in order to build great businesses in the high tech space.

There Monty led corporate strategy and Americas execution toward Americas Tier 1 MNOs including AT&T, America Movil, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Telefonica, and established/managed Americas-focused collaboration/partnership relations with Tier 1 OEMs including Ericsson, Nokia, Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, and NEC. Driven predominantly through the progress achieved within the Americas, Cisco acquired Ubiquisys, with Monty as one of the designated key employees as part of the transaction.
  • Wireless Telecom Group
    Ceo

Through relations developed as part of Tekelec acquisitions, Monty became CEO and Vice Chairman of Wireless Telecom Group, Inc. In that capacity Monty actively consolidated four previously independent companies while directly integrating the global sales team and managing the product portfolio. As a portion of the company was focused on mobile handset testing, major wins included Verizon, LG, Nokia, and Huawei. The technology used, including being PicoChip’s first commercial customer, was directly synergistic with the emerging small cell industry, both utilizing reduced-size mobile base station technology. In fact, Monty was pursuing the use of small cell technology as the core of a breakthrough low-cost tester, including that of the industry's leader, Ubiquisys. Based on those relations along with previous work done within Motorola with Ubiquisys CEO Chris Gilbert, Monty later joined Ubiquisys to build its business within the Americas.
