Ever since graduation, I wanted my degree and research-design skillset to be applied to projects that had an undeniable beneficial impact to global communities. My first opportunity was as a UX Manager based in the UK for Nokia where we delivered an innovative mobile Healthcare, Education and Agriculture service to rural communities across India, China, Indonesia and Nigeria. Design challenges abounded with multiple cultures, over 40 languages, regulatory requirements, limited data access, business model and income restrictions, design constraints and field-work logistics. It was awesome (work) and a very proud moment to contribute in a positive manner to people’s lives through the design process.After moving back to California, I continued working as a UX Consultant across Design, Research, Strategy and Management, focusing solely on Healthcare for the last eight years. I took part in launching multiple FDA-approved Medical Devices through both Digital Health and HFE/UX work. I’ve worked on Product and Service Design on hospital infrastructure projects, delivery of care, portals, dashboards, devices, diagnostics, ‘front door’ and marketing sites, enterprise apps, health data, mobile apps, web apps instructions for use, CRMs, EHRs, and virtually every aspect of Healthcare I could come across.This depth and breadth of experience has led me to think about designing for Healthcare through an empathetic and problem-solving mindset.Imagine someone stating: “My has .” (A simple yet emotionally-powerful and fundamental statement.)→ Now: let’s find the kinks in the overall system of care that could be improved to better help people if only the digital aspects (user experiences) were better than they currently are. This could apply to the Patients themselves, their Caregivers, Providers, Clinicians, Payors and even Policy Makers or other Community stakeholders.→ Let’s then match the ‘doers’ and sponsors and equip a team with the right mission, tasks and tools! There, my friends, you have a worthwhile Digital Health project on your hands.Unfortunately, we’ve all witnessed faaaar too many shortcomings within Healthcare delivery at large. Fortunately there is a multitude of talent and dedicated individuals and organizations committed to this type of continuous improvement.
