I was born and raised in Wisconsin, and I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, and I am currently finishing up my Master’s Degree at Boston University - MET in Software Development. Yes, Theatre Arts. I am sure that is what stirs up questions for most people, and I don't blame them. What is a degree in Theatre Arts anyways? Well, let me tell you:A degree in Theatre Arts is a communications, English, history, art, music, and business degree, all for the price of one! What other degree, after all, offers a collaborative work environment that requires you to communicate your ideas effectively, do extensive research, work as a team and as an individual, come up with new ideas and implement or test them, creatively problem solve unique questions, and work effectively with deadlines? Theatre has set me up for so much success in my professional development, and I still rely on skills that I learned from it to this day. Many people told me that I would live to regret my degree decision, but that has yet to happen. And I doubt it ever will. Software Development and its lifecycle is very similar to putting on a theatrical show. Someone has an idea, that idea is passed down to different departments to work on different important aspects, and various technicians work on a small portion to fit into the whole program or production. I am sure you can spot the similarities in the skill set of a theatre technician and a software developer already. At Boston University - MET, I have learned so much, from object-oriented programming skills, various programming languages, the different stages of the development lifecycle, and UML diagramming. I have also learned how to communicate my software ideas effectively, and how to technically implement them with a lot of research and problem solving. I know that I will make a great software developer, and I cannot wait to see where I end up next!
