It began as High School Cube, and it began as idle talk between colleagues.When the idea was first pitched to me, I knew without a doubt of its potential to excel.This opportunity provided me with what I had been seeking all along - a chance to build my own system that could scale to great heights. I didn't know anything about video or livestreaming at the time, but that was no obstacle.In the following years, I helped grow a little idea into reality. The small band of visionaries who set out to make something special expanded into a close-knit company of hard-working people. Although I built the initial site from scratch, it was the new faces joining the fold that really set us apart.More important than what I've built is what I've learned along the way. I've learned how to create clean systems that others can add onto. I've learned how to harness my soft-skills to become more approachable and respectable. And I've learned that your greatest asset in business isn't what you can build, it's where you place your focus.

After my arrival to Austin, Texas, I began to seek out website experience. This resulted in multiple collaborations with designer friends from Texas Tech, who also found themselves in Austin.The partnership was simple: If you can design it, I can build it.Each project was different, and required a different set of skills to achieve. There's nothing I like more than learning new skills, so it was a constant headrush.Although I value the wide variety of projects, I was ready to steady my focus on a new singular job, and so I stopped taking new clients as I began work on High School Cube.

I was originally hired to automate the print production process. I came in as a brash young college grad, armed with knowledge on how to convert a manual catalog production process into a lean, mean Javascript-powered printing machine.As the company shifted from print to the web, I found myself back in the familiar waters of web development, and I pushed us forward in creating a socially-aware apartment-finding site.This opportunity was what defined me, and allowed me to learn and grow to the point where no task was impossible. I learned Ruby on Rails as it was just breaking into mainstream, and churned out code like a champ.Where it would take a team of developers to build a new feature or product in other companies, here it would only take me with a long night and a load of coffee.

Returning to my little hometown of Pampa, Texas after graduating, I found a job with the freedom to learn new technologies.My job was divided between creating marketing material for this wireless internet service provider, and making websites for a variety of companies.The first newspaper ad I created resulted in a flood of business to the small company, so much that the installation crew was unable to keep up with demand.This was also a golden time of front-end web development, with a focus on clean hand-written code, and I was hooked. The resulting websites I created for clients took advantage of these new technologies to make something I will forever value.Quickly my path took me away from this tiny town and on to Austin, Texas.

I supported myself through college, working full-time stocking groceries overnight.After two years of working steadily and learning the job, I was promoted into the crew chief position, which manages the night crew and acts as the store official in the off-hours. This required me to involve myself in hiring and firing workers, as well as scheduling and conflict resolution.It was here that I first learned how to motivate a lazy employee, or maximize productivity through the worker processes. It also forced me to manage my own time efficiently, to allow for 40 hours of work in addition to class time and homework.Even though this job was primarily a manual labor position, it set me on the path to become the leader I am today.
