I’m Morgan, an emergency medical technician and junior at George Washington University in Washington D.C, studying public health with a double minor in STEM teaching and emergency health services. Daily tasks included responding to student emails, gathering materials for class, providing thorough feedback on lesson plans crafted by 30-60 student teachers and supporting student teaching groups throughout their classroom and field experiences. Frequent tasks included independently teaching students when the introductory professors were unable to attend class, meeting with student teachers during office hours that I held twice a week, and conflict mediation between teaching partners. In the fall, I will be the teaching assistant for the penultimate course in the STEM Education minor - project-based learning, where 30 students will complete an extended, independent field experience using alternative lesson planning tactics. The last internship experience consisted of a 3 week period of independently teaching students from the beginning of November until Thanksgiving break. Responsibilities included developing detailed lesson plans that addressed NGSS/Common Core Standards as well as pertinent scientific and mathematical practices that aided in students' critical skill development, grading student work with a focus on trend examination for both holistic and fragmented comprehension development, considerations for universal design to address the diverse needs of all learners, adjustment of lesson designs to address the needs and pacing of students, continuous feedback and communication with mentor teachers and supervisors about student needs and development goals, and the development of effective classroom management strategies to create and maintain a safe environment for students to learn and explore in.
