Hi! My name is Morgan Winston and I am a junior at East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, where I am active in many extracurricular activities. I am a member of the National Honor Society and Student Congress (also known as student council). Additionally, I am the Social Media manager for the Diversity club at my school. I am also a member of the girls basketball team, where I serve as a captain, and the tennis team. In February, I co-presented Telling Our Story; Charlotte’s Black History Documentary at the 2024 Equity in Education Summit: Reclaiming Joy in Our Schools sponsored by Western Carolina University. In October 2023, I co-presented at the Color of Education Summit at North Carolina State University. The conference was hosted by the Raleigh-based Dudley Flood Center for Educational Equity and Opportunity.I am extremely passionate about social justice issues, and learning and educating others about African-American history. I believe we must understand and learn from our past so we do not repeat it.In February, my friend Maya and I launched a Black History Month project in which we highlighted Black Excellence in Charlotte by recognizing unsung heroes who are making a difference. We invited members of the community to nominate someone who exhibits Black Excellence. It could be a teacher, coach, student, faith leader, mentor — anyone who exemplifies Black Excellence. We created daily posts on our Instagram (@cltblackhistorydoc) featuring a community member. In 2023, I was the only youth to participate in a Women’s History Month panel discussion at her former middle school. After high school, I plan to major in political science. My goal is to attend law school, become a campaign manager, and eventually become a U.S. senator. Additionally, I play the piano and love to go thrifting!
