My preferred method of practice is prevention. I began my career in social work organizing for incarcerated individuals' which then led to a college roommate and I starting a non-profit out of our garage. This organization attempted to combat a failing system which kept people in the cycle of prison. While we were successful in breaking a few of those cycles, the phenomenon still occurred for hundreds more in our community. While I knew intervention was important, I found myself with a profound case of compassion fatigue after working in direct advocacy. This led me to pursue a Master's Degree in Social Work at the University of Michigan, focusing on Social Policy and Community Organizing. Here and in my career afterward, I found my passion for advocacy through social policy, community organizing, and public education. There are no ends to the complexity of the human mind. Working in mental health has made that clear. As a program director, I use these complexities to the benefit of our program and the field of mental health. You would not ask a fish to climb a tree, likewise you would not ask an employee to work against their strengths. This is how our diverse and ever-evolving field is improving, by working through a strengths-based perspective. Currently, I am using my skills to reduce the stigma of mental health, improve the access and quality of services for consumers, and advocate for just practices.
