Pharmaceutical SciencesCollege of PharmacyDr. Steven Schwendeman Laboratory- Investigated absorption of the cationic peptide leuprolide to various poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) polymers via an aqueous remote loading technique of microspheres to improve loading and encapsulation efficiency. Peptide release from PLGA microspheres is compared to that of injectable commercial long acting release formulations. - Studying poly(lactic-co-glycolic-acid) polymer controlled release millicylinder formulations for ocular delivery of atypical protein kinase C inhibitor and norrin to treat macular edema. - Investigated absorption of the cationic peptide octreotide to PLGA’s of varying lactic acid content by aqueous remote loading. The effect of annealing on octreotide release rate in vitro was also examined. - Studied the effect of PLGA polymer microsphere salt treatment and in vitro release buffer pH on loading of the GLP-1 agonist exenatide. The ability to release and sustain release in vivo was tested over one week and compared to the commercial formulation, Bydureon®. - Studied in vitro stability of leptin and leptin loading in self-healing microspheres. One month release in vitro was achieved over one month with a low initial burst release.
