HI-Spectral, LLC specializes in the design and manufacturing of novel Snapshot Hyperspectral Imaging Systems. HI-Spectral's technology was originally designed at the University of Hawaii for the DKIST telescope, the largest and most advanced Solar Telescope in the world. Our technology has the capability to efficiently capture detailed chemical composition information (Spectrum) for each pixel in an image, in one exposure (snapshot). Our avant-garde design resulted in a very compact and robust customizable instrument able to generate data with high spectral resolution at high speed. Its uniqueness will unlock new applications and uses for hyperspectral imaging. The reliable wealth of information generated by our systems will help government agencies and private companies make educated and impactful strategic decisions.

In charge of supporting the opto-mechanical design and management of diverse astronomical instrumentation projects for the University of Hawai'i, Institute for Astronomy.• Currently the Mechanical Engineer in charge of the following Instrumentation projects:- The Diffraction-Limited Near-Infrared Spectropolarimeter (DL-NIRSP) for the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST).- Robo-AO2 (autonomous laser adaptive optics system and science instrument) for the UH 88in telescope.- USNO-AO (autonomous laser adaptive optics system and science instrument) for the 1.8m telescope of the United StatesNaval Observatory Flagstaff Station (NOFS).- mxCSM: a massively-multiplexed Coronal Spectro-polarimetric Magnetometer for the study of the dynamics and the magnetic fields of the solar corona. (MEES Telescope)- The UH 88in Telescope Tertiary Mirror upgrade for autonomous operations.• Mentoring the Junior Mechanical Engineer at the NASA IRTF. Help review Instrumentation and facility project designs.• In collaboration with CANON Inc. in Japan, responsible for the mechanical design of the 336 micro-mirror Machined Image Slicer Integral Field Units for DL-NIRSP. Developed Solidworks macros to automatically generate all the optical surfaces based on the ZEMAX model data output. The automatic Visual Basic macros allowed to adjust and iterate on the design of the optical system efficiently. It also allowed to simulate the machining process.

• Mechanical Engineering Consultant hired by Oceanit to assist with a Phase 3 SBIR program funded by the DoD.• Designed the injection-molded weatherproof housing of a handheld gene-marker detection device for Diagenetix, Inc.• Improved the design and integrated new features on 2 different Edge-3D, LLC products: - Advised on and integrated changes to improve performance and to reduce the fabrication and assembly costs.- Presented several COTS part choice options, which took into account functionality, performance and cost.- Provided complete documentation (BOM, shop drawings, COTS parts specification sheets, etc.)• Designed a Prototype of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine for Pacific International Energy Solutions.

Facility Engineer for the NASA InfraRed Telescope Facility (NASA IRTF): • In charge of assessing and solving mechanical issues to ensure daily operations. • Managed a $500k Dome Resurfacing Project which involved Lead Abatement. Worked with an Architectural Company to define the project requirements. Produced the Bid Package in coordination with NASA and the University administration. Selected a contractor. Oversaw the construction effort and approved inspections performed by the A&E company.• Managed dome drive system refurbishment project: specified and integrated new servo-motors into the existing system, identified and analyzed the root cause of erratic locking of the dome and implemented design improvements accordingly.→ Helped writing the requirements and the bid package to select a contractor that successfully resurfaced the dome rail.• Directed telescope day crew on maintenance and upgrade tasks.• Defined the scope of work and technical requirements of a bid package to select a vendor to work on 2 facility projects: 1) Structural analysis of our telescope multiple instrument mount, and 2) Modelization of the telescope balancing. Provided all the receivables and any necessary technical support. Reviewed and validated / accepted the results.Developed mechanical design of astronomical instrumentation mechanisms, including opto-mechanical systems, room temperature and cryogenic motion systems, and cryogenic vacuum systems:• Design of a $4M facility-class echelle immersion-grating spectrometer (iSHELL) for the 3-meter NASA Telescope:→ Cryo-mechanisms, optic mounts, vacuum and cooling systems design.
