Morgan J Smart is a performer, librettist, singer - songwriter, dramaturg, and a story teller - inspired by love in all it’s many forms. Born in Chicago, Illinois - a city rich in color and community, Morgan discovered a love of live performance in the city’s art district. Morgan got her first guitar at the age of seven, but it was the second guitar, gifted to her by her older sister at age twelve, that really sparked a curiosity for song writing. Morgan attended Florida International University studying Communication Arts and Global Black Studies, merging the draw of writing with her interest in telling Black stories on a global scale. There she became an active member of the FIU Film Club, writing, directing, and assisting in the production of various short films. Smart then went on to graduate from NYU's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program, where she found the intersection of story telling and song writing, and first explored the world of writing for theatre, which has proven more fulfilling than she could have dreamed. Since moving to New York City, Morgan has performed in a myriad of one act musicals, as well as written three musicals of her own, Our Mother’s Mothers, AWAKENED, and SHADOWS. Morgan’s work has been presented and work shopped at GoodSpeed Opera House, Lincoln Center New Works Series, and with the New School on Broadway and NYU Tisch. She’s worked as a dramaturg with Hi-Arts NYC and with the New Victory Theatre on Broadway, and starred in a webseries premiering February 2022. Most recently, Morgan has written a movie musical produced by the New York Film Academy that will be released in the summer of 2022.
