Term #2 (May - August 2017)Worked in the Designs Engineering office and completed a variety of jobs to help support the operation of the Pascagoula Oil Refinery:Revised and completed Engineering Work Orders, work packages assembled by Designs Engineers to ensure all new installations and routine maintenance are in compliance with both industry and Chevron engineering standards.Designed a new piping installation for the purpose of allowing steam out of net chloride gas treater drums. Routed 2" piping from steam header to 4 individual drums; ensuring that all designs were within compliance of industry standards.

Term #1 (Jan. - May 2017):Worked on-site at the Chevron Oil Refinery in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Rotated through various divisions of maintenance and operations crews, observing the day-to-day efforts to maintain and improve refinery standards. Learned basic TIG and MIG welding techniques in the Off Plot Piping Fabrication crew. Assisted in the fabrication and installation of a pressure relief device on a distillation column.Observed the pulling of a 14,000 HP pump motor for maintenance. Conducted a steam turbine trip test at over 12,000 rpm. Disassembled, diagnosed, and reassembled centrifugal pumps in the machine shop. Learned about various seal classifications and uses. Performed operator rounds, sample catching, preventative maintenance, pump swaps, and valve operation while shadowing operators in various units throughout the refinery. Gained high level knowledge pertaining to the complete refining process: from the initial entry of crude oil feed, to the refining of end products such as Jet Fuel, Diesels, and Petroleum Based lubricants.

Performed laboratory testing in the Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) lab concerning the application of the Bosch life support process to carbon dioxide emission reductions.Screened New Technology Reports (NTR) for novelty and commercial potential. Assigned various designations to multiple technologies and suggested future courses of action for the agency. Categorized a database of over 2,500 NTR's; analyzed inventor's abstracts for the purpose of assigning one of the agency's 16 patent categories to NTR's. Analyzed data concerning the agencies top 25 royalty-earning inventors and top 25 royalty-earning technologies. Developed metrics outlining this data in a clear and precise manner, as well as provided insights on the implications of this data such as key markets that the agency should target.Developed a proposal for NASA Headquarters outlining the need, cost and procedure of a trade show event team. This proposal was designed to consolidate the agency's trade show efforts and maximize efficiency while minimizing costs. Conducted a mass media campaign, during which over 1,500 entities were contacted. These include universities, commercial companies, print media, and individuals. The primary purpose for this campaign was to disseminate NASA innovations back to the public whose taxes fund the agency's endeavors. Conducted market research concerning one of NASA's commercially viable technologies, the Fluid Structure Coupling (FSC). The FSC has been licensed by real estate developer, Thornton Tomasseti, and implemented on one of their properties in New York City. The primary goal of this research was to identify other markets where the FSC may apply such as the tanker truck, fire truck, oceanic vessel, and aerospace industries.
