Senior Reference Services Librarian, Genealogy Coordinator
Oversees the activities of the Ackman and Ziff Genealogy Institute and supervises the work of 9 volunteers. Conducts reference interviews and provides guidance to ~ 15 patrons per day concerning research at the Center for Jewish History and beyond, in person and via phone, e-mail, and Zoom. This includes both genealogical research instruction and general bibliographic and electronic resource instruction. Through my leadership, from 2015-2019, the number of visits to the Genealogy Institute increased from 900 to 1400 per year. Spearheads the Genealogy Institute's annual Family History Today program series, which, for the last 3 years, has brought over 600 people into the Center for lectures, workshops, film screenings, and more. Between 2015 and Spring 2016, attendance at the series doubled, inspiring the Center to sponsor a second series that Fall. Plans and facilitates all group visits to the Genealogy Institute and represents the Center at relevant genealogy-related events.Launched and coordinates the Genealogy Institute's outreach initiative, which provides free workshops on genealogy research basics (on-site, off-site, and, more recently, via Zoom) for groups from senior centers, non-profit organizations, schools, and synagogues. From 2017-present, this initiative allowed me and my colleagues to expand our reach to around 3,500 participants, including 750 on-site, 350 off-site, and 2,400 via Zoom, most of whom had never been to or even heard of the Center for Jewish History. Created and manages the Genealogy Institute's New York Historical Synagogues Map project, the Institute's first digital humanities project and the first comprehensive map of early 20th century synagogues in New York City (over 1,400 synagogues thus far). Coordinates other Genealogy Institute projects with staff and volunteers.Acquires and manages the Genealogy Institute collection of reference resources, including books, periodicals, and maps.
