Notably, he specialized in the development of cell-based biosensor technologies that used machine learning principles to predict the cytotoxicity of chemically diverse samples; and developed biomaterial immobilization techniques (e.g., electrospinning ‘alternatives’) with the goal of enhancing the shelf-life stability of bioassays during his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at McMaster University. During his time at McMaster University he also contributed to the design and commissioning of face mask testing equipment, leading to the establishment of the Centre of Excellence in Protective Equipment and Materials (CEPEM), securing $1.2 million from the Ontario Together Fund. Furthermore, his expertise extends to the development of specialty chemicals and nanomaterials in the printing industry (Xerox Research Centre of Canada) and the mining sector (Vale). After his PhD studies, Patrick co-founded Emmoni, a biotech/labtech company that specializes in creating simple-to-use innovative laboratory hardware (patent pending MWellGX & PAVA96 products) to improve the storage and transport of critical materials including reagents and biologics. With help from The Forge by McMaster University, Innovation Factory, Haltech Innovation Centres, today Emmoni manufactures its products locally in Burlington, Ontario.

Researcher (Medical Testing Technology | Aerosols)Mcmaster University Apr 2020 - Jan 2022• Concurrent with my Ph.D. studies, I collaborated with medical and industry professionals to aid in the design and commissioning of an apparatus used to measure Differential Pressure (DP) and a Particle Filtration Efficiency (PFE) apparatus to evaluate face mask performance.• Investigated the use of aerosol medical devices including the Aeroneb® Nebulizer, Collison Nebulizer, and Blaustein Atomizing Module (BLAM) to produce stable aerosol particles.• Performed DP and PFE studies on over one hundred face mask material candidates; our work led the creation of the Centre of Excellence in Protective Equipment and Materials (CEPEM), the research group receiving $1.2 million in funding through the Ontario Together Fund, and two journal publications: Global Challenges, Journal of Aerosol Science -
Chemical Scale-Up Engineering Researcher (Printing Technology | Specialty Chemicals)Xerox May 2014 - Aug 2015Xerox Research Centre Of Canada, Mississauga, Sheridan Park• Engineered and commissioned lab & pilot scale continuous aggregation and coalescence reactor systems for toner development. A necessary process modification was discovered which involved the addition of a counter-flow tube heat exchanger (due to heating and cooling hysteresis effects).• Optimized process conditions and toner formulations consisting of resins, waxes, and pigments via DoE work and assessed system process failure modes via failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA).• Worked to create a digital twin of the aggregation process using particle collision theory and MATLAB. -
