I am Regional Chief for Newfoundland and Nova Scotia and currently hold the Education portfolio for the Assembly of First Nations. I am Mi’kmaq from the Waycobah First Nation, located in Unama’ki (Cape Breton), Nova Scotia. I began my political career at the age of 19 when I was elected to Council and went on to serve as Chief of Waycobah for a total of 19 years. I have always promoted Youth programs and I am proud to have been instrumental in Wayccobah assuming jurisdiction over their education with their school moving from federal control to a new building built and administered under the Mi’kmaq Kina’matnewey self-government agreement. During my time as Chief, Waycobah built a state of the art Health Centre and over 100 houses in the Community. I initiated, and continue to coordinate, the Unama’ki Christmas social and reintroduced the Mi’kmaq Summer Games to the province. I have dedicated my entire adult life to serving Mi’kmaq people and practice, my Mi’kmaq ways of prayer each day by giving thanks to the Creator. I helped develop a mission statement for my community, which I havepersonally adopted. I am the proud father of 5 children and I am committed to helping my family, my community and the nation to be proud of being Mi’kmaq and First Nations in Canada.
