Crude palm kernel Oil(CPKO) and Crude Olein oil are refined using 3 processesRefining/ degumming (phosphoric acid is added to the Crude oil), this chemical reacts with the non hydramtable phosphatides. bleaching /discoloration: an adsorption process where colour pigment, hydramtable phosphatides and other impurities are adsorbed on the surface of the bleaching earth.Deodourization... the distillation of oil where free fatty acid is stripped out from the triglycerides. because of the lower boiling point of the FFA. As a process Control personal, process Control parameters like temperature, vacuum, dozing rate of acid etc are manipulated and controlled to suit the process.

I worked at the "mother of the refinery" unit ; The Crude distillation unit 1(CDU1). This is the first stage of Crude oil refining. Products like Naphtha ( which is further processed to petrol), Kerosene, DHGO (Dehydrated Heavy Gas oil), DLGO(Dehydrated Light Gas oil) and bottom( Residue)are produced . CDU unit is also called ADU ( Atmospheric distillation unit). The residue from ADU is sent to VDU ( Vacuum distillation unit) where distillation takes place under reduced pressure(vacuum). Products gotten from VDU are HVGO( heavy vacuum gas oil) LVGO(light vacuum gas oil) and vacuum Residue. As a Process Control on Intern I learnt to Control the unit's process parameters like the distillation level, dehydrator levels, heat exchangers and columns temperatures, column's pressure and flow rates. Products samples are also taken for analysis in the laboratory, these results also give ideas of what parameters to manipulate and which to keep constant. it also show if the products ( Intermediate products actually) met specifications.
