ACLI routinely works closely with Members of Congress, Senators, and administration officials.At ACLI, I served as the lead lobbyist for all legislative matters involving the taxation of life insurance companies and the product they provide to their consumers. Working in conjunction with member company representatives, it was my responsibility to identify needs, opportunities, and risks for the industry and develop legislative strategies to address them, including recruiting allies among Members of Congress, Senators, and their staffs.During my tenure, I led many successful legislative efforts that included:- Shepherding member companies and industry allies to save corporate owned life insurance (COLI), a critical line of business hat generated tens of billions of dollar in new business every year. - Repealing two esoteric sections of the Internal Revenue Code—sections 809 and 815—enabling member companies access to assets frozen for decades. - Spearheading a coalition of industry trade associations branded under www. Secure Family.org to protect the taxation of life insurance products in the event of an overhaul of the Federal tax system. Boasting one of the largest political action committees (PAC), NAIFA lobbyists are able to develop and maintain personal relationships with key members on Capitol Hill.At NAIFA, I served as the lead lobbyist and strategist on all matters affecting the taxation of insurance products and retirement security. In addition, I was the day-to-day manager of NAIFA’s sophisticated and effective grassroots program, conducting training sessions to teach participants how to establish local relationships with their Members of Congress and Senators. Based on NAIFA's breadth and depth, our grassroots participants were able to maintain personal relationships with 95% of Congress. In this role I successfully:► Spearheaded NAIFA’s efforts to achieve significant improvements to our nation’s retirement system by raising pre-tax limits for defined contribution plans and individual retirement accounts. It also allowed catch-up contributions for those over the age of 55.► Energized NAIFA’s grassroots network after learning that key tax decision-makers in Congress were going to impose a tax on corporate owned life insurance (COLI). As a result, tens of thousands of contacts sent a clear message of opposition to Capitol Hill. The new tax on COLI was never considered again. Show less

When Senator Boren resigned to become President of the University of Oklahoma, I moved to Georgia where I began to work for Senator Paul Coverdell as a field representative. Senators Boren and Coverdell developed a bond over the quick democratization of Eastern Europe when the Soviets retreated. At the time, Coverdell was Peace Corps Director and Boren was Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. It was through Boren contacts that I came to work for Coverdell.
