About Steve Morris
I am a Chartered Engineer with 28 years experience as a Mechanical Engineer. Over the last 17 years I have had the privilege of managing one of Cardiff University's large scale off-site labs called the Gas Turbine Research Centre (GTRC) (https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/65612283). The Centre continues to provide me with stimulating challenges and I have been fortunate to work with exceptional academics and researchers in the field of low carbon heat and power. This exciting work reaches a national and global audience and directly addresses the need to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels to ensure a sustainable future for us and future generations. I am currently involved in several research projects to further develop our understanding of hydrogen and ammonia for heat and power applications.I am passionate about the safety and wellbeing of staff, students and visitors and gained further experience of occupational health and safety through CPD activities which included obtaining nationally accredited qualifications from NEBOSH and IOSH. I am also a Technical Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, with particular experience with compressed gas systems, pressure equipment (PSSR, PER, PED), Hydrogen and Ammonia Safety, Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulation (ATEX, DSEAR). One of my proudest achievements has been to relocate, commission and develop the GTRC into a thriving, globally respected research facility. I strive to continually improve the sustainability and capabilities of the GTRC through a series of efficiency improvements and equipment upgrades.

Center Manager - Gas Turbine Research Centre
The GTRC is one of a handful of academic research facilities in the world to have the operational scale which enables novel research studies to be conducted into the functionality of new Gas Turbine combustion systems, components and fuels under elevated conditions of temperature and pressure, as would be experienced within a gas turbine engine during operation.Reporting to the Centre Director, Prof Phil Bowen, I was responsible for the installation and commissioning of the GTRC, which was a £7.9m project, over a two year period. Following successful commissioning of the GTRC I took on the role of managing the operation and continual improvement of the Centre, and my responsibilities include:- Line management and development of technical and research staff.- The long-term strategic development of the Centre and its contribution to the School and College Strategic Plans. - To provide professional management support and advice to the Centre Director on all matters concerning the operation and development of the Centre- To prepare briefing papers, reports, business cases and other documentation supporting the Centre’s development.- To anticipate and understand areas of risk for the Centre, planning and implementing actions aimed at mitigating these risks. - Preparation of annual expenditure budget, managing the facility tenancy and preparing longer-term forecasts and scenario plans- To develop effective partnerships with external stakeholders; industrial collaborators, other public sector organisations, government departments, professional institutions, external networks and forums.- Health and Safety, ensuring that University policy, procedures and legal duties are applied utilising the most up-to-date equipment and practices.- Operate as Test Controller and Emergency Response Leader during experimental campaigns to ensure the safe operation of the facility.- Co-Author conference and Journal papers with research colleagues.
Senior Project Engineer - Centre For Research Into Energy, Waste And The Environment (Crewe)
As a senior project engineer at CREWE, I was involved with innovation and engagement with industry to promote technology transfer. During this time I managed the School of Engineering's UKAS-accredited, £100k turnover, Solar Energy Testing Service (SETS) and a €3M EU programme called POWERFLAM2, comprising twelve European partners concerned with co-firing coal with biomass. I project managed numerous research collaborations with industry, three of which have won the Cardiff Innovation Network award for early stage collaboration. These projects were: 2005 – The design of a sustainable power solution for a low motion surveillance buoy for Ledwood Engineering Ltd 2004 – Computer modelling to optimise the suspension system of a domestic washing machine for Andrew Reason Ltd2003 – Computer modelling to optimise the heat exchanger of a food waste processing machine for ITT Ltd.
Senior Development Engineer
Responsible for improving production efficiency and product quality by introducing new working methodology and state of the art production equipment. This included Total Quality Management (TQM) and lean manufacturing philosophies, and the introduction of automated material handling systems such as robotics. This period was a great engineering grounding for me with a wide range of experiences from equipment design, project management, man-management, PLC programming, control, instrumentation, data acquisition, fault finding, electrical, pneumatics and hydraulics. The last project I managed was the de-commissioning of several production lines and subsequent installation and commissioning in Slovakia.
