As a member of the SPS team, I supported quality improvement work on several hospital-acquired conditions (Ex. VTEs, CLABSI, CAUTI, VAP) across network of 80+ hospitals. The ultimate goal was to reduce, and eventually eliminate the occurrence of these conditions. I analyzed aggregate outcomes and process data using Microsoft Excel and SAS to perform factor analysis, assess compliance to network standards, and identify high-performing institutions. Based on the results, I created and presented unique visualizations of the analysis at network webinars, meetings, and national conferences.

Researched risk prediction models for Progression of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD):We began our study by researching published risk prediction models to identify the most common variables used in the study of the progression of the disease. The goal of this project was to analyze patient populations to develop a prediction model for transition between stages of chronic kidney disease. Using Access and Excel, I analyzed the data to develop groups by stage for analysis using Markov Chains. The project continued on after my graduation. Nephrology Data Analysis Project:Assessed the use of the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) guidelines as part of a data analysis project with local nephrology practice. Another student and I performed a demographic analysis of patient data using Microsoft Access and Excel. Positive Patient Identification (PPID) Project with Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh: I conducted independent research on positive patient identification to use a benchmark for the current status at Children's Hospital. Along with two other students and professors, I interviewed nurses and staff to understand the PPID process. I created detailed process flow of the PPID procedure using Microsoft Visio. We also analyzed medication scan data using Microsoft Excel to identify areas for improvement.

I provided technical assistance to Analysts as they provided information and advice on any updates or changes to billing procedures to departments at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Together, we interviewed and educated staff from hospital departments on changes and updates for charging services. I analyzed the volume of billed procedures using Microsoft Access and Excel, and I researched the CMS stance on several new modifiers as well as Medicare policies on non-covered services and coverage of services for End-Stage Renal Disease. I was also exposed to several other aspects of work in hospitals. I got to see the charge audit process from start to finish, I was able to learn and use the hospital EHR, and I got to experience first-hand, the daily interactions between representatives from different organizations.

As a member of the Operational Excellence department, I worked with the supply chain group to analyze the use of cartons in the current distribution centers to find the optimal number and cubic dimensions needed to best ship products to branches. The ultimate goal of my project was to improve operational efficiency, reduce errors, and maximize carton fill utilization. Using pivot tables in Excel, I reviewed over 5 months of order data, and recommended a new group of cartons based on statistical analysis and prototype testing. The changes were expected to lead to a 20% reduction in material cost, as well as an operational savings by reducing the amount of corrugated material in the distribution center and the branches.
