I lead BMO Equity Research's approach for integrating ESG factors and information into our fundamental research offering. I am also responsible for publishing thematic ESG reports and delivering ESG thought leadership content to our clients.

Doug is the head of Sustainalytics' newly formed Portfolio Research team and oversees all research and publications related to the financial implications of Sustainalytics' research calls. He was previously the head of Sustainalytics' award-winning thematic research team. Doug's work is broadly focused on assessing the investment risks and opportunities associated with cross-cutting ESG themes, including climate change, water scarcity, energy transition, smart mobility, and health and wellness. Doug has worked with some of the world’s largest investors on ESG integration across investment approaches (active, passive and smart beta) and asset classes (equity, fixed income, alternatives). He was the co-author of the responsible investment industry’s first-ever typology of ESG integration (2017) and has experience constructing portfolios to test the out-performance potential of ESG investment strategies. Doug's work at Sustainalytics has been cited in The Financial Times, Bloomberg, Huffington Post, Pensions & Investments, The Globe and Mail and The Guardian. In 2017, a study that Doug led on investment strategies around water scarcity won the Farsight Award, which is administered by the London Sustainability Exchange and recognizes the best individual piece of analysis done each year by an investment research institution that integrates traditional financial analysis with longer-term ESG issues.

Corporate Knights is a Toronto-based media and investment research company that publishes the world’s highest-circulating magazine dedicated to ESG and sustainability themes.Doug worked for three years in Corporate Knights’ capital markets research division and led the development of the company’s ESG strategy. Our approach used quantitative techniques and regression analysis to identify ESG metrics that were correlated with positive risk-adjusted returns (alpha) on a global, industry-specific basis. Our products included one of the world’s first suites of ESG smart beta indices. In addition, Doug was the lead author of several external research studies and projects, including The Global 100, the Newsweek Green Rankings and Trends in Sustainability Disclosure: Benchmarking the World’s Composite Stock Exchanges.

ICF International (NASDAQ:ICFI) provides professional services and technology solutions that deliver beneficial impact in areas critical to the world's future. Doug worked as a consultant in ICF's energy and environment practice and led a variety of projects that explored the financial and investment upside of sustainability themes. These included a study for the International Finance Corporation in which we built a model to analyze private equity deal flow in the US $250 B clean tech sector, and a project for the World Bank that identified over $40 B worth of climate-driven investment opportunities in the global Oil & Gas, Mining and Transport sectors. Doug also worked with financial sector clients in Canada to assess the impact of climate change regulation on clients’ loan portfolios, with a focus on credit risk impairment.

Innovest was one of the early pioneers in the field of ESG investment with a portfolio of sub-advisory mandates totaling US $1.2 B.Doug worked as a Senior Analyst covering the global Metals & Mining sector and as a member of the Carbon Finance team. While at Innovest Doug helped develop the world’s first carbon-tilted corporate bond index in partnership with JP Morgan Chase. Doug also authored the 2006 Global FT 500 Carbon Disclosure Project, an award-winning study that analyzed corporate best practices in greenhouse gas emissions disclosure and management.
