Dr. Naghavi is an innovative physician scientist, entrepreneur, and life science executive with over two decades of leadership experience in academia and industry. He was trained at the Texas Heart Institute under distinguished cardiologists Late Dr. Ward Casscells and Dr. James Willerson, and is mentored by Dr. Valentin Fuster the world-renowned leader in cardiology. Dr. Naghavi is recognized for his medical inventions and the SHAPE initiative (Society for Heart Attack Prevention and Eradication www.shapesociety.org) a nonprofit organization focused on innovative solutions for the ultimate eradication of heart attacks. His early research focused on the detection of vulnerable plaques, the immediate underlying cause of heart attacks. His research lead to establishing vulnerableplaque.org which quickly grew followers worldwide and became SHAPE. In 2006, SHAPE Task Force proposed new guidelines to overhaul existing outdated methods and bring noninvasive cardiac imaging to the forefront of preventive cardiology. In 2009, SHAPE helped pass Texas legislation HB1290 which became the first heart attack preventive screening law in the US. Dr. Naghavi is currently leading a major initiative towards securing CMS reimbursement for Coronary Artery Calcium Score. Dr. Naghavi led several major consensus publications titled “From Vulnerable Plaque to Vulnerable Patient; A Call for New Definitions and Risk Assessment Strategies. Part I, II, II” which are among the highest cited publications in cardiology. He is also the editor of “Asymptomatic Atherosclerosis: Pathophysiology, Detection and Treatment” a comprehensive book on early detection and treatment of heart disease. Along with academic activities, Dr. Naghavi is also known as an entrepreneur inventor with over 20 patented inventions and multiple startup companies. He is passionate about innovations in healthcare and shifting care from late stage sick-care to early stage health-care by enabling consumers with low-cost medical technologies and actionable information powered by AI and robotics.
