I'm an interdisciplinary software engineer with a passion for exploring how novel ideas and solutions emerge from the interplay between different disciplines. I'm particularly interested in the intersection of software engineering and systems change, and much of my work is rooted in the idea that technology can play an important role in addressing complex societal and organizational problems. My areas of engineering expertise include full-stack web development, systems design, highly scalable architecture, cloud services, client-side performance, UI/UX design, databases & data engineering, dataviz, GIS & geospatial data, blockchain/DLT. Alongside this I have some experience in firmware & embedded systems, electronics & PCB design, CAD & 3D printing, 3D graphics, reverse engineering, networking & security.Dataviz has been a recurring area of focus for me over the past 10 years. This started as a personal interest and over time naturally developed into a professional one. It informed and drove a lot of my early learnings in front-end web development, led me to work in data journalism and interactive development at The Guardian, and eventually to my current roles as tech lead at ViT and as a teacher at UdG. Throughout this journey I’ve come to appreciate dataviz as a rich, interdisciplinary toolkit for knowledge discovery and communication, involving engineering, data analysis, scientific method, design, journalism, cognition, cartography, ethics and more, all of which are applied to the context of a particular topic area.My other main areas of focus are related to how we live and how we work. I believe that these two core aspects of our lives are currently at odds with our deeper needs and desires, and that many problems, from the individual level to the global, are exacerbated or caused by this dissonance and neglect. I also believe that a rapidly growing awareness of this is leading us towards a paradigm shift. On how we live – I’m currently involved in the creation of a co-housing community in the UK. And on how we work – I’m working in the org design space, bringing together expertise in dataviz, system architecture and DLT to build tools aimed at accelerating the evolution of DAO design.
