Data Scientist focusing on the research and development of Macquarie’s pioneering fee-for-service robo-adviser platform, OwnersAdvisory. I joined the team as a founding technical member to tackle the challenge of the on-demand generation of SoA (Statement of Advice) with Natural Language Generation (NLG) techniques. The NLG engine is a core component of the platform that converts upstream data to natural texts for direct end user consumption. Another main responsibility of mine is enabling data science capabilities of the platform to facilitate customer profiling, portfolio reporting and analytics with Hadoop, Spark and Zeppelin. My third main responsibility is developing and maintaining the platform’s NLP-enabled virtual agent, Jess, as the first-line customer service representative that gathers, recognises and categorises customer inquiries and feedback, and provides appropriate responses. Besides my main responsibilities, I also contribute to various aspects of the platform development including RESTful API service implementations (in Java and Python) and responsive front-end developments (in AngularJS).

With the rapid advance of the Internet and mobile computing, large-scale online information networks are becoming the main vehicle of information dissemination as well as information central storage. As it is expressed in natural language, information stored in information networks is by and large unstructured. Also, it occurs in a maze of complex network structures, which challenges all research dedicated to exploiting information from social networks.My research focuses on distilling knowledge from large-scale information networks by combining Social Network Analysis (SNA) with statistical Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Text Mining techniques. I am particularly interested in NLP-intensive analysis of information networks where rich textual contents and complex social interactions co-exist, and in understanding how a synergetic approach leveraging both contents and link structures can facilitate the mining of knowledge. This interdisciplinary research has Statistical Machine Learning and Network Data Mining at its core.
