Have been a regular film critic at "The Japan Times," Japan's oldest and largest English-language newspaper, since 1989. Covered the Japanese film industry for "Screen International" from 1990 to 2005 and for "Variety" from 2005 to the present.Have written or contributed to many books in the field, including "The Encyclopedia of Japanese Pop Culture" (Weatherhill, 1997), "Contemporary Japanese Film" (Weatherhill, 1999) and "The Yakuza Movie Book" (Stone Bridge Press, 2003), "No Borders, No Limits: Nikkatsu Action Cinema" (2007), "Nudes! In 2005 programmed a 16-film retrospective of action films from the Nikkatsu studio for Udine that was the first of its type outside Japan. A book based on research for the retro, "No Borders, No Limits: Nikkatsu Action Cinema," was published by FAB Press in 2007. Have served on film juries, including the Japanese Eyes section of the Tokyo International Film Festival for three years running.Worked as a script advisor on Edward Zwick's "The Last Samurai," the number one film at the Japanese box office in 2004. Have written articles on Japanese films and popular culture for many publications both in Japan and abroad, including the "Asian Wall Street Journal," the Japan edition of "Newsweek," the Japan edition of "Time," "Kinema Junpo," "The Japan Quarterly," "Interview," "Men's Vogue" and "Time Out."Have been interviewed as an expert in the field by many media organizations, including BBC, CNN, NPR, "The New York Times," "The Washington Post" the Associated Press and Bloomberg.Specialties: Writer, critic, consultant.
