I worked with Professor Katie Fowler on derivative free optimization methods. I developed a modified version of the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm to tackle difficult simulation based optimization problems. We applied the method to a groundwater contaminant remediation problem using MODFLOW for the forward simulator.

I helped coach the Norfolk middle school MathCounts team for three seasons. As their coach I tried to make the team "practices" fun, which helped get many more students in the MathCounts program. By getting more students involved, the Norfolk team had one of their best ever finishes at the regional competition.

My work focused on the use of high performance GPU computing for the real-time solution of inverse problems coming from weather radar networks. This served as my introduction to CUDA programming and SIMD parallelism.

My internship focused on deterministic solutions to large inverse problems arising in contaminant remediation and other groundwater modeling scenarios. My primary focus was on the application of the PEST program (which implements a modified Levenberg-Marquadt scheme) to calibrate hydrologic model parameters (permeability, recharge, etc...) to observational data.

I was a whitewater rafting guide on the Colorado, Roaring Fork, and Arkansas rivers in Colorado. I utilized my knowledge of the rapids, guiding technique, and local history to provide a safe and memorable experience for guests on the river.
