The LESS/RCC subsystem was the reentry heatshield for nose and wing areas that were too hot for the Thermal Protection System (TPS) tiles.Represented the Orbiter Design Center as the technical authority on RCC composite hardware, its assembly & attachment, and its backing insulation for ground turnaround processing, requirements definition, nonconformance resolution, hardware procurement and supportability, flight design, and milestone review.Responsible for the declaration of flight readiness to the Mission Management Team (MMT) and signed the Certificate of Flight Readiness for 33 missions (STS-92 through STS-132).Commanded a multi-disciplined team of engineers to provide real-time mission support for impact threats to the Orbiter leading edge – in particular, review of ascent imagery, radar, and impact detection data; on-orbit inspections with the Orbiter Boom Sensor System to address ascent debris, micrometeoroid, and orbital debris.
