A small group of passionate professionals used 21st-century strategies to save a historic 36-year-old publication from the brink of going out of business. As a new hire just as the magazine was bought and reorganized, we worked in “startup mode” to expand our audience, increase diversity, raise our professional standards and recruit and train new talent to resurrect Out Front into what it is now — the largest LGBTQ news media organization beyond the coasts. I started as the junior editor in January 2012 and by October 2013 was the top editor at the magazine. (It’s still going strong today! Before I was an editor at Out Front, I was a staff writer taking news assignments and updating the blog (one post every 2 hours). I was also the primary person responsible to analyze and update social media as users expanded from around 1,000 Facebook followers in May 2011 to over 2,000 in ORGANIC growth by December (and up to 6,000+ the following years as Editor). As staff writer I also proofread the entire print magazine, 40-48 pages every 2 weeks.

In January 2011, Rep. Pete Lee had just been elected into the unique position as a Democrat in Colorado Springs, one of the most famously Republican cities in the United States. Working carefully with Rep. Lee, a team of interns and the Press Office, I built and managed social media channels; created, built and managed a website; ran scheduling for the representative, led correspondence with constituents, and planned and facilitated town hall meetings to give the representative a successful first term.

Intern on Advance Team. Wrote memos to prep Candidate for public events, researched and wrote internal briefs on various communities for campaign stops, helped to make travel arrangements, received and detailed event requests.

Planned and ran weekly youth activities for middle school and high school groups, wrote and executed engaging lesson plans and curriculum, attended special events as well as regional youth conferences as chaperone.

For 2008 U.S. Presidential and Colorado Senate Elections: Voter registration, neighborhood canvassing, targeted persuasion, get-out-the-vote.
