Map mining features in Lumpkin County and collect water and soil samples from approximately 50 locations in Lumpkin County, testing for the presence of heavy metals still in the soil today. In this capacity, the students will learn methods employed to collect and process water and soil samples as a component of environmental science and archaeological fieldwork. Throughout the project, the students will have creative input, interpreting the causes of heavy metal contamination and contributing to the final dissemination of the conclusions of this study through conference presentations, the development of an interactive website, and a co-authored manuscript to be submitted for peer-review to a leading journal. this project was presented at the Georgia Geo-spatial conference as a student presentation.
