Implemented DevOps best practices and tighter collaboration between Dev and Ops teams. Established a mentor relationship with junior developers teaching Bash, Go, Docker, AWS, and CI. Expanded Vim and tmux skills.

Lead a team of ops engineers and backend developers. Go became my primary development language, and I gained experience in DevOps with Docker and AWS.Worked alongside a core contributor to the Go language and Docker projects. Mentored backend developers in their transition from Ruby on Rails to Go, drawing from my own experience in that transition.Designed and contributed a majority of the codebase for an object storage service with live sync. The service utilized MongoDB for persistent storage and WebSockets for sync notifications.Became a Certified ScrumMaster and filled the ScrumMaster role for the backend development team. Facilitated daily stand ups and weekly planning, managed sprints and epics, conducted sprint reviews and retrospectives.Architected backend services supporting a RESTful API driving a production customer support product. Established async code reviews to speed development cycles.Implemented zero-downtime deployments with AWS ElasticBeanstalk using a promotional model to move services from development to test and finally live environments. Used Travis for Continuous Integration.Became familiar with server-side components of WebRTC. Deployed a STUN/TURN server and assisted with architecting an out-of-band signaling scheme. Researched current MCU and SFU implementations.

Joined and eventually led a team of Rails developers in building a cloud platform. Learned Test-Driven Development principles.Contributed to SOA component services that comprise the cloud platform's feature set: file storage, simple key-value storage, mobile push notifications, and user management. Contributed a majority of the code for an analytics service to track resource usage per account.Assisted with code security audits. Tracked testing line coverage across multiple repos and drove the effort to increase overall coverage to 85% of SLOC.

Promoted to a broad management role, the scope of which is difficult to capture in a job title. Became comfortable leading others and working with unclear requirements.Transitioned both the flagship Perl e-commerce site and the secondary Rails e-commerce sites to a hosted e-commerce platform (Shopify). Wrote Ruby scripts utilizing the Shopify API to keep data in sync between the two sites.Implemented QuickBooks to improve operational efficiency, and lead the migration from the incumbent outdated accounting software. Wrote Ruby scripts to mount the QuickBooks data file and sync inventory data with two websites.Accumulated deep knowledge of a diverse product inventory to further improve UX on both e-commerce sites. Wrote Ruby scripts to fetch product data from manufacturers and update product metadata on both e-commerce sites with new info; scripts included geo calculations to serve as a sanity check for manufacturer data, which was often inconsistent.Rewrote from scratch a geographical product catalog utilizing the Google Maps Javascript API and the Shopify Product Metadata API.Became an expert in domestic and international regulations for shipping hazardous materials by water in order to sell software in that domain. Performed a Sales Engineer role to close sales with enterprise clients. Performed a Technical Consultant role to help direct development of the software.

Joined the staff of my primary web development client. Ruby on Rails became my primary development language and framework.Migrated an e-commerce site from a PHP cart solution to an open-source Ruby on Rails cart solution—with a brief detour attempting to write a full e-commerce solution from scratch. Modified Rails models to suit the business's needs.

Started a solo practice for full-stack web development. Learned the importance of project management and milestones.Took on management of an e-commerce site written in Perl. Implemented heavy caching for performance gains and migrated from table-based layouts to idiomatic HTML. Wrote a few Perl scripts to sync data from an accounting system to the site's database.Developed knowledge in SEO best practices, and implemented that knowledge in client sites. Also provided general IT support services for Google-hosted mail, inter alia.Created an e-commerce site using an off-the-shelf PHP e-commerce product. Customized UI as well as DB schema to fit the client's needs. Took a deep dive into domain-specific product knowledge in order to inform the site's UX.Converted a site from an MS Access-backed CMS to run on an open-source Ruby on Rails CMS. Customized admin dashboard workflows to suit the client's needs.

Found employment with the University of Florida where I was a student. Developed a reputation as "the database guy."Worked as a full-stack LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) developer managing a few web properties of the Department of Occupational Therapy at the College of Public Health & Health Professions, University of Florida. Worked alongside three other team members, sharpening each other's knowledge of CSS and jQuery.Implemented a solution to perform asynchronous processing in a PHP script and return one of two images to indicate the processing result in UI. AJAX became a thing shortly thereafter, otherwise I would try to claim credit for it.Became HIPAA certified in order to assist with a research project focussed on elderly drivers.
