So I'm working to build out the definitive online source of rigorously reported, research-backed articles about what metabolic health is, why it matters, and what you can do about it.Among the things I work on:- Built a science-based editorial operation from scratch, including strategic and tactical docs and processes. - Maintain editorial operation that publishes 2-3 deeply reported, fact-checked science and health articles per week with one FT person (me!) and a network of freelancers.- Managing SEO strategy and implementation to ensure our articles reach both health-curious and lower-funnel audiences.- Managing email lifecycle efforts and a weekly newsletter with a 250k audience, 70% opens, and 10% CTR.- Ongoing analytics management and reporting using tools like Google Analytics, Posthog, and Positional.- Evolving editorial strategy and tactics as our startup evolves.

For an old magazine editor like me, the cool thing about the current marketing landscape is that you don't have to be in media to create compelling, service-driven journalism. Companies today understand that they can form deep consumer connections by publishing useful, reported stories. I was fortunate to spend a few years helping Apogee Content strategize and produce that kind of editorial work for Fortune 500 companies like AT&T and Ford.

As a lifelong entrepreneur and maker (I started woodworking when I was 10 and even kept a shop in the backwoods of Brooklyn), I jumped when an old friend suggested we launch a building-focused company together.The result was Cubist Engineering, a building, design, and consulting firm specializing in architecture and building logistics around custom prefab spaces. We've worked on everything from a cabana for a private Caribbean island to a 4,000 sq ft mountain-top dream home.

I was hired as an assistant editor to launch and run a new back-of-book section called How 2.0. We ended up winning the National Magazine Award for Best Section in 2004 for the second, third and fourth issues we ever did. Over the next six years, I held five different titles and varied responsibilities, including running multiple sections of the magazine, creating several editorial franchises, launching our first podcast (in 2003), overseeing the feature well, and leading digital projects from web videos to virtual worlds. I wrote features, managed staff and improved my poker game. I also did media, including recurring segments on local morning shows, talking head spots on CNN and NPR and co-hosting two episodes of the Food Network series, Food Detectives. I got another National Magazine Award nod in 2010 as a finalist in Columns and Commentary for Theo Gray's amazing Gray Matter column. (Damn Fareed Zakaria beat us.)

Several years ago, I worked with a bunch of crazy smart people on trying to imagine what content could be in the touchscreen world. We called the project Mag+. We launched an app for Popular Science the day the iPad came out. Steve Jobs stood on stage and called it "really, really breakthrough"​ and "king of the hill."​ That was a good day.In 2011, we spun the project out into a standalone company to license what we'd created to the larger brand community. We ultimately built more than 4,000 apps for companies like Nike, Disney and Bloomberg. Through it all, my job was to help the folks who make all kinds of content figure out how to deliver it effectively in a mobile world. As a co-founder, I touched every part of the organization, but my primary focus was on guiding the vision and strategy for the product (including acting as product owner for the first three years) and helping our marketing and PR teams communicate that vision externally, writing the web site, creating content marketing and delivering presentations. And from day one, I worked closely with our clients and prospects to help them understand not just our product, but the digital content world at large and how they could succeed in it.

After the launch of Mag+, I left PopSci and went to work full-time in Bonnier's R&D department as its first US-based employee, working on projects around apps, videos, UI/UX and the future of media.

I was in charge of the front of book for the proposed launch of eBay Magazine. Great fun, amazing staff. We put together a prototype issue which, sadly, never saw the light of day.

Unlimited is a brilliant business lifestyle magazine in Auckland where I was lucky enough to spend a few months writing departments and features, including a cover profile on fashion designer Karen Walker, and helping to lead a redesign of the book.

Some kind folks taught me graphic design while I was an undergrad work-study student. I spent the next seven years in full-time design positions at the University of St. Thomas, West Group and Adaytum, as well as doing freelance work for clients ranging from rock bands to corporations. I can still perform InDesign key commands in my sleep, but outside of the family holiday card, I tend to leave design to the pros these days.
