Improves content relevance and engagement to promote student success, teaches self-efficacy, and creates an environment of respect and creative expression.· Major school community achievements:✓ School plastic waste repurposing programs: Pioneering and implementing 2-year-long project to develop and deploy Maui County’s first student-led sustainable plastic waste repurposing system for local and global change. Raised school student awareness of the growing global plastic cycle issue and took action to inspire a student-led recycling and repurposing machine system. Engages with students, parents, school administration, county officials, local businesses, engineers, and educators throughout the project. Result: Reduced number of students using single-use-plastic, initiated a 98% efficient bioplastic repurposing system, inspired student-designed sustainability device prototypes, and have currently taught over 500 students the value and possibilities inherent in responsible plastic use. ✓ School hydroponics systems: Instructed and led student teams in brainstorming, iterating, and constructing automated indoor/outdoor hydroponic garden systems for the school community. Taught students biodiversity and sustainability science through a hands-on STEM project which benefits students for years to come. Result: created a gardening system which consumes 95% less water than standard farming techniques, 100% organic and 100% student designed.
