I have had an eclectic career, to say the least.My career journey includes 22 years at IBM, several thriving tech startups, a painful stint as a high school teacher, a gig raising funds for the Jewish Community Association of Austin and a near fatal bicycle accident that changed my perspective forever.On a July morning in 2002, I was riding my bicycle and hit a car head on where our combined speeds exceeded 50 mph. After five days in a trauma center I was up on crutches, within ten weeks was back on a bicycle, and four months later was traveling internationally on business after surviving an accident that has a 10% survival rate. I had a new perspective on life.Thirty years of wandering the proverbial career desert, often repeating the same mistakes over and over, taught me my most crucial lesson: Most people don’t really know what makes them happy at their core, what fulfills them. They pursue money, status, a skill set, all of which provide some level of satisfaction, but not contentment. They wind up feeling frustrated and trapped. Others have figured out what they need, but don’t know how to chart a course to get there.As an active member of the Launch Pad Job Club, I found myself counseling friends and associates on their career journeys and finally realized I’d found my vocation. I would use my extensive training experience to help others—especially Baby Boomers—find careers that they could grow into for the decades that lie ahead.What I discovered was I have made multiple Career Pivots. Where I transitioned from career to career by taking multiple steps or pivots to get there.
