The Cohort-based Integrated Research Community for Undergraduate Innovation and Trailblazing (CIRCUIT) is an internship focused on bringing research opportunities to students from underrepresented backgrounds. Interns are placed into interdisciplinary teams of 3 or 4 to accomplish groundbreaking research in one several areas ranging from machine learning to materials science. At CIRCUIT, I have been working in the Precision Medicine: Predictive Analytics cohort, which brings machine learning techniques to health data for Multiple Sclerosis patients. We are developing a data science package in Python that finds novel subgroups of patients and disease trajectories. By providing a tool for clinicians to use at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institute (JHMI), we hope to enhance patient treatment by providing specialized care to patients of an incredibly complex disease. My personal inputs in this project include software development and general understanding of machine learning and data science techniques applied to patient data. I have leveraged relevant computational and theoretical coursework to help my team progress in a focused, directed way.Outside of our cohort research project, all CIRCUIT researchers participate in the Breakthrough Investigation of Terrestrial Swarms (BITS) project, which requires developing swarms of autonomous robots that can navigate through known and unknown environments. I have been working on the hardware and theoretical side of this project, though software and hardware teams are fairly fluid in their responsibilities.
