I have spent my working life in leadership positions in the Navy, Oil and Gas, and maritime sectors helping organisations understand and manage operational risks. I believe we should all strive to get the job done right; where the risks to people, the environment, our products and services and to our equipment are considered holistically and managed using evidence-based systems and processes. I believe extremism of any kind is problematic, including risk management perfectionism. I believe that good leadership fosters a culture of understanding and trust to support diligent management of operational risk. WHS management systems, processes and tools should be accessible, easy to understand, simple to use, and crucially, relevant to the end user.I also believe that I do not have all the answers and hope that I will have the wisdom and courage to update my beliefs in the face of new knowledge. Staying curious, having ongoing dialogue and remaining open to new ideas is probably best.
