Water leaks can be a significant destructive environmental phenomenon that can result in extensive damage if not addressed promptly. IoT water leak detectors in the market all use an external power supply (generally batteries) to stay active and detect leaks. AquaSensing is a UWaterloo based startup which has developed the world's first battery-free IoT water leak detector using a novel nanomaterials-based energy harvesting method.• Led a cross-functional team of mechanical, materials, electrical and firmware/cloud engineers in battery-free Internet of Things (IoT) water leak detection startup• Executed transition from lab-made device to scalable product, resulting in 40 % drop in final device cost and production capacity of 2500 units/month• Directed implementation and testing of ultra low-power BLE SoC (Inplay’s IN100) in custom PCB design which ultimately reduced PCB cost by 40% and dropped average sensor response time by 10 seconds• Developed control plan for step-by-step quality control, resulting in product failure rate of <1% while adhering to the KPIs defined• Directed market research to identify i) customer pain points, and ii) gather feedback for product modifications resulting in 1-year road-map• Presented AquaSensing’s pitch deck to numerous potential clients/customers leading to hundreds of sensor sales and securing initial customers• Determined prioritized features and front end layout of V1 dashboard based on customer requirements, resulting in V1 user dashboard release (AQS Dashboard)• Developed V2 mechanical enclosure CAD model, considering the failure modes found in the V1 design, and towards a lower cost (DfC), simpler assembly (DfA) and more reliable device (DfP)• Developed manufacturing documentation including, Work Instructions (WI), SOPs, DFMEA/PFMEA, DVP&R/PVP&R
