Jacmel, Haiti

I spent one month in Jacmel, Haiti working along side of FGIM. I worked with the older teenage girls as they began their transition out of the orphanage. I also taught a sewing class twice a week to women from a local community of refugees from the 2011 earthquake. The sewing class gave the women a solid community, and provided them a way to make income, but to also learn a trade that they can continue independently. In between my scheduled responsibilities, I worked with the local church, spent time with the children at the orphanage, and organized the guest house I lived in.

During my time at the CAC, I observed Forensic Interviews, typed up files for court, and attended multi-disciplinary team meetings. I learned a lot about child welfare, and the how children and families are effected by trauma and child maltreatment. The goal of the CAC was to advocate and obtain justice for child and teenage victims while minimizing further trauma.
