About Steven Coleman

With 21 years of experience and being a professionally registered Incorporated Engineer with the Institution of Engineering Technology, I was recently employment as Heathrow Airports Engineering Specialist for their Baggage Systems. During the six years with Heathrow Airport I owned multiple roles and continued my journey of professional development;Gaining certification as Associate in Project Management (APM) by leading Heathrow’s Continuous Improvement Programme for its baggage systems, I achieved in 2019 our best year ever a saving of over £10 million in baggage to customer repatriation costs. Having been trained by the British Standards Institution in Fundamentals of Asset Management and the Key Elements of Auditing, I achieved certification to ISO 55000 Asset Management for the Baggage Operations Department. As a certified and registered member of the Institute of Asset Management I assured new equipment through the Heathrow capital delivery gateways. Ensuring compliance and physical installation of the new equipment, quality checked the required handover documentation before bringing it into live operations.Prior to working at Heathrow I was an Electrical Engineer for Siemens and Vanderlande for whom I designed and delivered Heathrow’s Terminal 5C and Gatwick Terminal North Baggage Systems and Heathrow’s latest flagship facility Terminal 2.

As Head of Continuous Improvement, I engineered solutions to increase performance of the baggage conveying machinery. I used the Six Sigma statistical and data driven approach to trial solutions and measure the results, this aided in building the business cases and raised funding through the Executive Team. I scored the proposals from the supplier bids, raised the order and Project Managed the works. See examples below;I introduced an upgrade to the scanners that read the barcodes on the bag tags, the average improvement was a 12% increase in performance, equalling 180 bags per scanner that no longer had to be diverted from its route to the plane.Speed up of Terminal 2 check-in desks changed the baggage orientation, improving the bag tag read rate, lowered product jams and raised bags successfully screened by the X-ray machines by 32%, this lowered the manual interventions and reduced the amount of operators required by three general operatives and one technician. With an annual budget of £1.4 million I tendered the works to suppliers, collating and scoring the proposals then Project Managed the works that would take place in areas where often machinery was being operated and passengers were present. This meant liaising with site teams to ensure risk assessments had been completed and method of working safely was acceptable, machinery had to be turned off and isolated and at times security had to be present due to the airport airside landside zones restricted access.Heathrow has over 120 thousand registered assets for its baggage systems and to manage them I achieved certification to ISO 55000 Asset Management for the Baggage Operations Department. I created the asset management structure with the procedures and milestones developed and implemented for its upkeep. I documented the structure in an asset management plan document, which is used to aid the assessment process for recertification that takes place every 3 years.
