As an emerging Recreational Therapy professional, I am motivated to help others achieve their health goals in all spheres: physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and spiritual domains. I have seen the immense benefits of goal-oriented play, leisure, and recreation to help all individuals accomplish their goals. I love that Recreational Therapy looks at the whole person. Prior to my education at WCU, I attended a different four-year university studying Exercise Science. While this profession also helps individuals achieve their goals, I felt that the streamlined way that the industry assists patients in the narrow-scope desensitized health care and did not fit with my values of providing holistic care. Since transferring to pursue this career field, I have learned all the more about the importance of looking at clients as a whole person and using recreation to help usher individuals to accomplish their goals. Some of my favorite experiences include watching individuals with brain injuries smile with pride and empowerment after completing a difficult Chair One Exercise routine that I had led. Additionally, observing older adults step back in time to their carefree, child-like joy, while playing noodle ball in the assisted living facility. One of the most rewarding experiences occurred while facilitating a "Paint your Emotions" group with individuals facing homelessness and behavioral health diagnoses. Several individuals expressed a sense of release and a "weight lifted off their shoulders" after a positive group discussion was facilitated. All this to say, I am motivated by helping others become the best that they can be, no matter the difficulties they face. I want to help others be successful, specifically in a physical rehabilitation setting, using recreational modalities such as yoga, adventure therapy, HeartMath, or Chair One Fitness. I am excited to pursue internships for Spring 2025 to further my learning experiences and develop important skillsets.
