Global Citizenship Education:As I continue in the teaching profession, my vocational ambitions are defined by the idea of Global Citizenship Education. I have a rich and varied background that informs both my outlook on the world, my educational philosophy, and the approaches I bring to the classroom. Global: Having grown up in Terrace, BC, I'm familiar with the opportunities and challenges of life in rural settings, but my degree in Geography was driven by a curiosity to understand the broader world. I love the capacity of the discipline to offer big picture answers to local questions. This same curiosity brought my early career choices through remote landscapes in the forestry industry, to the urban landscapes of New York city as a social service worker, to the vibrant landscapes of developing countries in Asia and Africa as a humanitarian.Citizenship:Geography is a discipline that addresses the idea of place. Citizenship addresses how we relate to our place in the world. How we identify as citizens informs our efforts to make our world a better place. My career path has been defined by work to support vulnerable populations. This includes post-prison rehabilitation work in New York, homelessness work in Terrace, BC, and human rights work in Cambodia and Zambia. Along this path I have also volunteered with those trying to make a difference, which means supporting the very poor living at landfills in Lithuania, working along-side rural coffee farmers in Honduras, or organizing the sponsorship of Syrian refugees in Terrace. Education:As a father of three, I find myself shifting my interest towards the future. As I've worked in the education sector, both as teacher's assistant and a Teacher Teaching on Call in the Coast Mountain School district, I realized how much I value working directly with young people, to help them in their own discovery of their place in the world and how to relate to that place. As an aspiring high school Socials Studies and Geography teacher, I have the great privilege of drawing from my own experiences to support an emerging generation of global citizens.
