Mrunal Sarvaiya work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Senior Robotics Engineer
I developed the software architecture and roadmap for robot autonomy. My work was focused on a wide range of projects for a mobile manipulator - motion planning, trajectory generation, custom low level controllers, navigation planners, remote teleoperation and state machines.
Robotics Engineer - Part Time
Capstone Project - Software And Controls
For my Master's capstone project, I worked at Squishy Robotics and implemented a MPC algorithm to avoid obstacles, developed a Kalman Filter to estimate its states and improved the tensegrity robot's wireless communication system
R&D Test Systems Engineering Intern
I developed a data logger in python for dynamometer workstations that replaced commercially available loggers priced at over $5,000/computer. The program was deployed on over 20 workstations, increased data accessibility and reduced post processing time since the data gets uploaded to a company wide server where it is accessed by Jenkins and Jupyter. It streamlined the data collection process by automating data transfer to the network and removing the need for user input.A by-product of this project was the ability to use python to interact with the existing testing architecture. This allowed engineers to write test scripts in python instead of simulink
President
Responsibilities included various administrative and organizational tasks. Organized weekly team meetings for over 60 students, held external outreach events at high schools and represented the team at the university’s engineering open house and recruitment events. I increased funding by developing relations with corporate sponsors and other organizations. Maintained monthly expenditure reports and allocated budgets for 6 subsystems
Business Team Member And Presenter
I was one of the two presenter for this event and was also actively involved in making the presentation and the market research behind it. Primarily I was responsible for coming up with a manufacturing scheme showing how and where all the products would be manufactured along with the associated machinery. I also gathered data to determine the yearly target sales and potential ways to convince buyers to pick our race car over others.Placed 1st amongst 65 competing universities at Formula SAE Lincoln and 2nd amongst115 competing universities at FSAE Michigan.
Cooling System And Simulations Project Lead
I managed a group of 3 students to design, test and select new configurations of the radiator and fan via on track testing and data analysis. I was able to perform a complete engine thermodynamic analysis using data gathered by running the engine at different loads in the dynamometer to determine the ideal heat loss rate. Combining the above data I was able to determine the minimum radiator size to effectively cool the engine. My design reduced the weight of system by 20%.I developed a GT-Power model to simulate the current engine along with the associated intake and exhaust geometry. By using this model I was able to test different intake geometries by varying runner lengths and exhaust geometries by varying primary lengths and diameters. Based on these results a new intake runner length was selected which brought the peak power point on the torque curve 10% closer to the average RPM that the car runs at during dynamic events.Apart from the technical side of things, I held weekly group meetings and trained new members on how to use the various softwares required.
Research Assistant
Researched and configured a DC Motor-Encoder combination for a Drone reducing the weight of the system by 34%Programmed an on board controller for the motor that increased precision of the manipulator arm by 40% and increased range of motion by 100%Developed a Matlab interface that directly connected to the controller, allowing efficient manual tuning of parameters and data analysisDesigned a high fidelity state space model of the system in Simulink to estimate the torque of the motor
Research Assistant
I designed an experiment to observe how the vapor layer thicknesses of yield stress fluids vary during the Leidenfrost effect with the aid of Interferometry. To aid in this analysis I used developed a matlab script using image analysis tools which allowed me to quantitatively measure the vapor layer thickness.Further, I captured high speed videos of yield stress fluids impacting heated surfaces, qualatiatively showing how varying different concentrations affect the fluid’s tendency to stick
Project Lead
I designed a mechanical robot with optimized linkage system for maximum step size, stability and ease of manufacturing. The link lengths were chosen after performing a dynamic force, velocity and acceleration analysis on linkage system. This data was also used to determine the required driving torque and consequently used to design a geartrain. I also manufactured the chassis, gear train and linkage system through 3D printers, laser cutters and machining tools
