Inform and guide Microsoft's strategic and technical direction wrt Developer facing technologies and systems architecture as an advisor to Microsoft's Chief Technology Officer. Working across Microsoft to improve systems and developer experiences in Azure, Office, Windows, etc. Working on several AI initiatives as well as cross-company systems architecture convergence. I have built a wide range of AI powered applications and AI Agent Systems, coordinating AI Agents work across the company - including virtual dev team of agents inspiring Github Workspaces, and pioneering our polyglot distributed actor-model AI agent framework based on Microsoft Orleans (merged into autogen).

Architect for multiple developer-centric services on Azure.

Led planning and measurement for migrating the largest service in Microsoft at the time (licensing for all MSFT products) to a containerized .NET Core on Azure. Implemented SRE for the entire org, taking Livesite effort from nearly 50% down to < 10% of total eng hours.

Leading multiple teams in the architecture, design, and operations of distributed systems providing resiliency at global scale; design and implementation high velocity cloud-native development lifecycle and tooling; strategy and org design for Microsoft SRE;

Providing Energy Storage Systems (think LiFePO4 batteries for solar/wind/backup power) and Cloud managed microgrid software systems. The company originally started by building services to augment domain expertise using artificial intelligence. Primarily relying upon Probabilistic/Bayesian Programming approaches building on the work of Jaynes. Service built upon novel research involving codifying expertise, modeling uncertainty, and merging traditional machine learning approaches with probabilistic modeling. This was a commercial passion/hobby incubating while working at Microsoft. Completed projects in computer vision, natural language generation, schedule optimization, and deep learning. Later pivoted into energy storage systems, microgrids, and marine electric vehicles.

Working in the VMware Office of the CTO, Incubated the group that became the Cloud Native Business Unit. Helped lead initiatives in cloud-based application architectures at VMware. Building products, services, and teams working with distributed systems, PaaS, micro-service architectures, and container cluster management technologies such as Google Kubernetes, Apache Mesos, and Docker Swarm. Represented VMware in the Open Container Initiative and Cloud Native Computing Foundation.

Defined the strategy, product, and roadmap for VMware's Cloud Platform API's, CLIs (including PowerCLI), and Extensibility mechanisms for the Software Defined Datacenter;• Product leadership role in shipping four versions of vSphere/ESX (>500,000 customers), • Expanded vSphere API ecosystem from $15b to > $60b;• Led creation of new culture/processes around API Stewardship and governance;• Delivered a modern REST API and extensibility architecture into vSphere/SDDC, along with native language SDKs and command line tools;

Product leadership role in defining and shipping three versions of vCloud Director (multi-tenant cloud platform); • Added several features to vCloud Director API that simplified development – allowing integrations to reduce their code by up to 70%;• Delivered API extensibility mechanism and integration bus, enabling ecosystem expansion;• Grew vCloud Director API ecosystem from 8 partners to >1000 in 18 months;

(Our EMC division was acquired by VMware)• SaaS product definition and architecture for application management tooling, led design programs with early-adopters; • Directed research into problems of fault tolerant application management infrastructures at cloud scale; • Built services covering problems of consensus, resource scheduling, constraint management, distributed desired state configuration, and multi-cloud infrastructure drivers for deployment to AWS or VMware;

EMC Cloud Infrastructure Division acquired SourceLabs in Dec. 2008 in-part on the basis of the work I had led in the SourceLabs cloud computing projects.• Defined requirements for enterprise cloud computing services and products working with Fortune50 design partners. • Co-led design of a prototype Cloud Application Management platform culminating in a keynote demo with the VMware CEO during EMCWorld 2009, leading to VMware acquisition of this team;• Developed product vision and planning to grow the team rapidly across three product areas: Cloud Services (PaaS), Application Management, and Cloud Migration/On-ramp;

Led program management/product definition for SourceLabs products: enterprise java SW development stacks, cloud application management, open source risk management, SaaS services for SW fault analysis and remediation, scalable distributed data extraction and search platform;• Designed and implemented risk management platform for Open Source Software that was implemented at F100 financial institutions; • Successful delivery of a cloud computing and application management platform usingSourceLabs technology at Merrill Lynch;• Led product development and strategic consulting initiatives with large customers -building cross- organizational teams and running multiple sw projects simultaneously;• Designed software and consulting to help large (>10,000 developers) companies make organizational, policy and technology changes to improve developer collaboration and overall process maturity through applying the techniques of Open Source Software movements to their internal development processes;• Prioritization and assignment of development work, release planning, and mentoring or assisting development team, including the pivot from shipping periodic releases of a software development stack to continuous releases of a SaaS service;• Also ran team that delivered IT operations;• Designed multiple systems for automating workflow around composition, deployment, and management of application services using cloud computing.• During financial crisis that decimated customers in our target market, co-led the pivot from enterprise SW products to SaaS services and helped prepare the company for acquisition. Advanced Operations and Engineering Services Group, BV provides engineering consultancy to the European aerospace industry, primarily to the European Space Agency (ESA). The focus of the group I led was on high performance scientific computing. Through this work, I participated in many ESA spaceflight programs, including Hubble repair missions, Arianne V, Rosetta/Philae, Cassini-Huygens, and Gaia. • Developed and led a new business unit delivering services for High Performance Computing, hired a team, developed the technical direction, project management, business planning, etc.;• Led consortium that designed a distributed collaborative development environment for concurrent spacecraft engineering, bidding for a project to be used by ESA’s Concurrent Design Facility allowing remote collaboration on spacecraft projects saving millions in project overhead and providing new capabilities to the design team;• Led simultaneous complex, international, inter-agency projects that required high levels of requirements engineering, coordinating, documenting, tracking, and diplomacy;• Delivered the design, integration and deployment of high performance computing systems for scientists and engineers, including collaboration, data management, pre/post-processing, parallel systems programming, source code/compiler optimization, parallel visualization, and grid computing; • Replaced many millions of euros worth of legacy UNIX systems with lower-cost distributed parallel Linux systems, adapting complex and diverse code-bases to be optimized for the new platform. Reduced computation times and cost by orders of magnitude. • Developed self-taught expertise in a wide array of spaceflight engineering and analysis requirements, terminology, and software packages, including those for structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, thermal analysis, avionics, and design;

Advised Fortune 500 customers, implemented networked computing solutions in data centers across the country at companies like Ford, Boeing, DaimlerChrysler, IBM, and Federal Express;• Delivered advice to customers on systems integration, automation, network infrastructure, strategy, and planning;• Designing, deploying and administering enterprise systems using UNIX/Linux (misc. Linux, AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, IRIX, BSD) and Win32 (NT, 2000, Terminal Server, Citrix WinFrame);• In 1998 I was assigned to NCD UK, where I worked on behalf of IBM at customer locations throughout the UK implementing NCD and IBM technologies and consulting. Authored IBM internal redbook on implementing terminal services with NCD technology.
