About Michael Scott Asato Cuthbert

Proven leader in applying computation and algorithms to solve problems people care about. Success in leading a new, digital age in music scholarship was followed by creating the largest undergraduate-focused research lab at MIT where as director and project manager we created algorithmic and programming solutions to problems neglected in the field. I'm a teacher, researcher, writer, programmer, manager, algorithm designer, and leader with 20 years of success in understanding where technology has not yet solved people's problems and how to get there.I'm the first professor at MIT's School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences to receive tenure primarily for software development and algorithm design. There I have worked on the computer science/algorithmic reasoning requirement for our students, the choice of major and how to provide opportunities and future success for CS students, online learning, and applying technology across disciplines. My labs have had nearly 100 students in them, with a majority computer programmers from backgrounds underrepresented in the discipline (primarily women and racial minorities). By unlocking student potential and caring for their needs, I have been awarded the highest award for student teaching at MIT and the award for innovative teaching with technology.I'm a researcher and writer with 50 publications and over 100 invited lectures and 600 GS-citations (in a low-cited field) and my work has been the subject of chapters of dissertations including (successful) validation studies. My writings include a large-scale statistical study of text-music relationships overturning centuries of received knowledge of word-music relationships, an estimate of the number of lost works from the Middle Ages (cited in Nature), and completions of unfinished works by distinguished composers recorded by major performers.I'm also a musician, composer, and husband with a family and wife in Honolulu (who has a fantastic career as a professor at UH Manoa) and I'm on LinkedIn in part to find new challenges for my computational/management skills that also cut down a 5,000 mile commute home.
