I co-founded Apptentive in 2011 with the goal of helping large organizations use their mobile apps to listen to their customers, derive insight, and take action. I built the Product Engineering organization from 3 technical co-founders to an interdisciplinary team of 20 people including mobile, front-end, and platform engineers, DevOps, QA, data science, product management and product design. The team was primarily based in Seattle, with several members geographically distributed in the US and an office in Kyiv, Ukraine. We are honored to have twice been included in Seattle Business Magazine’s list of "100 Best Companies to Work For".Apptentive’s SDKs have been installed over 1 billion times, and we powered hundreds of millions of conversations generating millions of pieces feedback for some of the world's best companies including Starbucks, eBay, Disney, Nordstrom, CNN, Philips, and more.Our infrastructure powered over 2 billion API requests per day while maintaining robust reliability and efficiency measures. We were powered by a cloud native architecture running on AWS and making use of Kubernetes and NoSQL data stores.As the CTO and a member of the leadership team, partnered deeply with other teams (sales, customer success, marketing, HR, finance) to establish and execute on shared initiatives.

Conceivian started as an "innovation lab", building prototypes and MVP for startups prior to them developing in house engineering teams. I was the project lead and a software engineer for a Vulcan (Paul Allen) backed startup building a photo management solution for the construction industry. Working with other developers and designers, we took the initial requirements and goals, developed and iterated prototypes, and successfully launched the initial version. Our tech stack included Ruby on Rails, MongoDB, Backbone.js, and Amazon Web Services.

• Program managed the development of Windows Phone Developer Tools, including specifying requirements and coordinating development across geographically diverse partner teams.• Led a team responsible for application compatibility initiatives spanning the 1200-person Windows Phone product group resulting in increased defect fix rates.• Worked in a small team drafting product strategy, identifying and segmenting target markets, detailing value propositions, and creating disclosure and engagement plans.• Evangelized product offerings and built customer relationships as a frequent participant, author, and speaker across Asia, Europe, and North America.

• Managed technical operations of the Computational Biology and Informatics Laboratory, significantly increasing capacity and availability for the lab’s production websites and databases. • Reduced migration time for a 700GB Oracle database from over a week to under an hour.• Planned, coordinated, developed, and shipped the first major release in over two years of the Genomics Unified Schema (GUS), an open-source bioinformatic data management suite. Served as the primary customer liaison presenting the product in North and South America. • Developed software, websites, and web services using Java, Perl, and PHP and assisted research scientists to improve usability, increase performance, and resolve defects.

Building websites before it was cool. I founded and ran a consultancy building interactive web sites -- back then an impressive thing -- for dozens of companies establishing their presence "on the information super highway". Administered a co-located server, hosted websites, and resold domain names. Eventually I wound this down to focus on "real work".

Synygy helped companies administer their incentive comp plans, allowing them to transition away from mainframes, spreadsheets, and sticky notes and onto a flexible, SaaS-based platform. I helped implement and manage these plans for Fortune 500 companies. This included requirements gathering and mapping, configuration and scripting, developing customized reporting, and ongoing support.

Once upon a time the way your computer got the Internet was using a wire, and that wire was actually your phone line. Your computer would dial a special number, and--using something called a modem-- scream and screech with another modem until both settled down and started peacefully sharing the bits and bytes that made up services like usenet, archie, and, later, the World Wide Web.I (helped) make that all happen.Brigadoon was an early internet service provider. I did a little bit of everything, from building websites (with perl!), to administering (Solaris!) servers, to producing getting started disks so your computer knew what phone number to call and have your modem yell at.At no point did I or have I had a grey beard-- I was just a kid having fun with 'puters.
