Alaina is responsible for sharing the University of Chicago’s research, scholarship, and models of urban investment with federal policymakers and national partners. She identifies strategic opportunities to advance efforts to enhance the quality of urban life in UChicago’s surrounding South Side neighborhoods, nationally, and across the globe. An experienced civil rights lawyer, urban advocate and political strategist, Alaina came to the University from The Raben Group, a public policy and advocacy firm in Washington, D.C. She also served as Associate Director for the first-ever White House Office of Urban Affairs during the first term of the Obama Administration. Alaina graduated from Stanford University and the University of Michigan Law School.

• Directed public engagement efforts for the first-ever urban office in the White House, developed outreach infrastructure, and systematized communications.• Designed the office stakeholder engagement strategy to inform mayors, non-profit, private, philanthropic, and think-tank leaders.• Crafted and executed the White House Urban Policy Summit to shape policy priorities for the Office.• Directed the White House National Urban Models Tour of seven cities which informed the policy development of the Healthy Food Financing Initiative, Choice Neighborhoods, Promise Neighborhoods, and Regional Innovation Cluster programs.• Oversaw international exchanges and was a member of the White House delegation to the United Nations World Urban Forum on sustainable global urbanization.

• Created and successfully implemented the national African-American voter engagement strategy for the General Election cycle, including managing staff in five priority states.• Authored and implemented successful regional political strategies in contested regions of five primary states: South Carolina, Connecticut, Ohio, Mississippi, and North Carolina.• Managed campaign relationships with key municipal and local elected leaders to secure endorsements and recruit community leader surrogates.• Drafted briefing materials, staffed principals, and organized regular briefings of campaign leadership and African-American stakeholders.

• Advocated for compliance with voting rights laws and trained community based organizations in election administration best practices in Michigan, Louisiana, and Alabama.• Created a faith-based outreach program in five target cities to enforce the rights of displaced New Orleans voters to participate in the 2006 mid-term elections

• Litigated voting rights cases and conducted civic engagement campaigns including developing a training curriculum for Election Protection programs in six states.• Served as lead counsel in Williams v. McKeithen, a judicial redistricting case, and served as co-counsel in ACORN v. McKeithen, an emergency injunction action to keep polling places open on Election Day, and Hayden v. Pataki, a class-action litigation challenging New York State’s felon disfranchisement laws. • Researched legislative history in support of the hill strategy for Voting Rights Act reauthorization
