Software Engineering ManagerKin Insurance Aug 2022 - Oct 2023Chicago, Illinois, UsSoftware Engineering ManagerProvided vision, mentoring, and high-performance team building for a business-critical team tasked with scaling the configuration, generation, and delivery of customer-facing documents for a rapidly expanding mid-stage InsureTech start-up. In many respects, for insurance, the documents are the product. They describe the financial and legal agreements purchased by the insured. For Kin to grow, it needed to scale its ability to rapidly create and configure documents for an expanding portfolio of products, update those documents as the regulatory and legal risks inevitably change, and verifiably deliver the documents with a high degree of correctness and reliability.Provided the initial vision for transforming the software architecture to meet the rapid growth demands and built a high-performing team to deliver the new architecture. Along the way, mentored one Sr. Engineer into a Staff Engineer role, two Mid-level Engineers into Sr. Engineer roles, and an Associate Engineer into a Mid-level Engineer role. -
Agile Trainer, Coach, Mentor, And WriterAgile Explorations Jun 2017 - Aug 2022Software Architect/Tech LeadDeveloped a B2C/B2B e-commerce marketplace simulator to be used during new engineer training. The marketplace (known as Nozama) provides a gamified e-commerce environment in which teams of new engineers compete against each other in order to capture market share while maintaining profitability. The marketplace has a configurable set of customer and retailer bots that enables administrators to adjust the competitive landscape as the teams’ solutions become increasingly capable. Nozama is built using Kotlin, Spring and Redis. Build, test and deployment are scripted using Gradle. Continuous integration and deployment uses Bitbucket Pipelines. Deployments are orchestrated by Kubernetes.New Engineer Training - Curriculum DevelopmentDelivered the curriculum, and trained trainers, for a new engineer induction program at a major multinational financial institution. The program guides the engineers through a project-based facilitated self-learning program supported by coaching from trainers. It takes the engineers through a series of technology level-set activities (unit testing, mocking, Spring, SQL, REST, React, CI/CD). These activities add or fix real functionality in a partially developed credit card rewards application. The engineers then spend the rest of the training working on a series of feature stories. This curriculum will be delivered to 6000+ engineers over the next three years in the US, UK, India, Argentina, and Singapore. Agile Researcher/WriterIn Pursuit of Agility: A presentation, now given in a number of different contexts, that extracts from a wide range of Agile methodologies (Scrum, XP, SAFe, Lean Design, Design Thinking, Lean, Lean Startup, etc) three primary lenses on Agile: Delivery Pipeline, Highly-Effective Teams, and Exploration. The Agile Explorations Framework (https://agileexplorations.com/explorer-handbook/): Created a framework for developing a team’s agile (lowercase “a”) practices and mindset.

Engineering Manager - BrowserNew Relic, Inc. Sep 2015 - Jun 2017San Francisco, Ca, UsManage the team working on the Browser product--New Relic’s second highest revenue generating product. In that role, accomplished the following for the team:● Took a team that had largely been self-managed (and resistant to process changes) and started them on the path to process improvements by asking for only one thing--retros.● Helped the team to successfully land a half-completed and grossly underestimated project that was slated to be presented at FutureStack (New Relic’s yearly convention). Reset the project with a realistic estimate, and then focused the team on delivering a demo rather than a completed feature.● Put in place a lightweight estimation process using planning poker to estimate major features in ideal schedule weeks. Then used a multiplier to account for unknown challenges and maintenance work. This made the work of the team far more predictable for the PM and product marketing.● Guided the team through two 6+ month projects, delivering major features that closed the core market gap for the Browser product.● Successfully helped the team navigate a massive organizational development effort known as “Upscale”, which resulted in a 50% change in team members and a shift toward full-stack development with “t-shaped” developers. ● Actively worked to promote the careers of my staff by finding opportunities for growth matching their interests and talents within the product roadmap. Frequently, this meant identifying areas where an individual has the vision and drive to lead, and empowering them to do so. Over the course of 18 months I was proud to have been able show demonstrable growth among my staff, leading to 7 promotions (out of 14 engineers who worked for me over the course of that period). Two of these promotions were to Lead Engineer. -
