Working at Starbucks allowed me to connect with my community, learn about myself, and understand the impact small gestures can have on the individuals they touch. During the graduate application process many of my regular customers would ask for updates, and when the decision came through they celebrated with me.During my time at Starbucks my team improved our store's Customer Connection score by 15%, but the real impact of that effort cannot be measured with a number. What began as an opportunity to work flexible hours as I prepared for graduate school became an experience I will cherish for the rest of my life.

As a Plant Operator and Production Operator I faced different points of failure on an almost daily basis. Discovering, identifying, and rectifying those failures was my primary job duty. Tracing the numerous gas and liquid lines of the site made it possible to form hypotheses about where the failure had occurred and what had caused it, even on sites and equipment with which I had little familiarity and experience. I was able to test those hypotheses almost immediately and act quickly to prevent losses in production, environmental impacts, and dangerous escalations of pressure.The diversity of problems I faced in the job made me adaptable and quick on my feet, ready to combine the things I did know into conclusions about problems I did not yet understand. One of the things that makes a person most successful as an operator is the ability to problem-solve on the fly, and I believe that my skills developed a great deal in my time at Covenant.

As a Junior Field Engineer for RockPile (eventually Keane Group, now NexTier) I learned the meaning of the words "hard work". My fourteen-on, seven-off schedule meant regularly working more than 100 hours a week, with much of that time spent swinging a sledge hammer or elbow-deep in a frac pump replacing pistons and valve springs.I am grateful that the training program developed by RockPile included extensive coverage of the work that frac hands do day-in and day-out, as it provided me the opportunity to better understand the things I would eventually ask them to do for me. Although my time at RockPile/Keane was short, it instilled in me the idea that leading has to be hands-on. Asking people to do things you cannot or will not do yourself eliminates opportunities to build trust, and with it the confidence that your decision was made with the full knowledge of its consequences.

I had the opportunity to work closely with Dr. Jessica Smith to analyze data and identify trends in student responses on the subject of Corporate Social Responsibility. Dr. Smith's work (NSF Research Grant 1540298) is being published by the MIT Press under the title "Extracting Accountability: Engineers and Corporate Social Responsibility" in September 2021.
