As an educator I have made it my mission to engage a new generation of scholars in cinema history and film analysis. I teach films as a medium for textual analysis. Scholars write argumentative essays exploring their claims and provide supporting evidence. As a teacher it is my responsibility to expose these students to the masters of the past and the exciting possibilities for the future. We cover more than the traditional film course as I pay attention to the cultural environment of my school and what my scholars need to feel engaged and inspired. I have developed my curriculum to curate to high school ELA common core standards, but to also be accessible for students doing distance learning in quarantine, students with disabilities, and dreamer students who are emerging English Language Learners and adjusting to their new life. I have built my Film Studies curriculum to match the unique needs of my students. We cover the basics of filmmaking, shot sizes, cinematography, sound, editing, and special effects. Once this is established we can use the language of a filmmaker to explore the classics and build our film studies philosophy. Some of the classic films we study are Nosferatu (1922), Double Indemnity(1944) and Psycho (1960).
